Buffalo Bulls 2013 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2013-14 Football Previews – (MAC) – Bulls

The Buffalo Bulls went 2-8 in 2010. They went 3-9 in 2011. In 2012, the Bulls went 4-8. The team has slowly been getting better, and expectations are definitely higher for the 2013 season. Jeff Quinn will have his most talented team since he has been here.

Mid-American Conference 2013 College Football Previews: Buffalo Bulls
Head Coach: Jeff Quinn
2012 Record: 4-8
Buffalo Gambling Odds to win BCS Championship: +2,000 (Part of Field)
Buffalo Gambling Odds to win MAC: +1,050

They are working to get back to the form they had in that magical 2008 season when Turner Gill was the head coach.

The Bulls return nine starters on offense and eight on the defensive end. Buffalo has plenty of star power, but they’ll need some other guys to step up so they can finish off some of those close games they lost a year ago. Buffalo dropped very close contests against UConn, Ohio, and Toledo last year.

With top end talent and a lot of returning starters, this team is expected to win several of those close games this year.

Team Strengths:

Branden Oliver may be the best running back in the MAC. Oliver has struggled to stay healthy, but when he is healthy he is the next thing from unstoppable. He is a strong runner who is extremely shifty and reads his blocks very well. The best news for Buffalo is he will be running behind one of the best offensive lines in the MAC this year. All five starters on the line are very good, and three of them will likely be considered as first-team all MAC performers. Buffalo should be able to run the football.

The Bulls defense is led by super linebacker Khalil Mack. Mack is a huge hitter in the running game, and he is one of the best in the country at rushing the passer from the linebacker spot. Buffalo has a huge star here, and he will be the anchor of a solid defense. Defensive end Colby Way is also an elite pass rusher. This is the star power I was talking about earlier.

The cornerback spot is very solid for Buffalo. Team depth in the secondary is good, and with a strong pass rush on the front, it’s hard to imagine many teams airing it out successfully against the Bulls.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

Team Weaknesses:

What about the quarterback situation? Licata and Zordich will battle it out for the signal caller job this year. Licata is a typical drop back passer, while Zordich is a scrambler. Neither of them have proven all that great under center so far. Buffalo will need improved play from the quarterback spot this year to keep defenses honest.

The Bulls have had horrible special teams play in the past couple years. The kick coverage teams were among the worst in the nation, and Buffalo has been losing the field position battle constantly. There isn’t really any help on the way, and if this unit keeps playing so badly it’s hard to imagine the Bulls winning a lot of those close games.

2013-2014 Buffalo Football Prediction: 6-6

Buffalo is one of those teams that is tough to get a read on. They have some very big strengths, but they also have a couple big question marks. If Oliver stays healthy, this team is going to be better this year. The defense is one of the best in the MAC. The passing game will likely struggle with consistency, and the Bulls have a brutally tough out of conference schedule. They start with road games at Ohio State and at Baylor. In the end, I expect this team to get back to .500 in 2013.
