Bowling Green Falcons 2015 NCAA Football Odds & Predictions

2015-2016 Football Previews (MAC) – Falcons

The Bowling Green Falcons won eight games in Dino Babers’ first season with the team. The Falcons had problems with inconsistency last year. They couldn’t seem to seal the deal in key situations. They lost their last three regular season games before closing the season with a bowl win over South Alabama.

MAC 2015-2016 College Football Preview – Bowling Green Falcons

Head Coach: Dino Babers
2014 Record: 8-6
Odds to win MAC (from BetOnline): +475
Season Win Total (from 5Dimes):5

Bowling Green returns 10 starters to an offense that was very good last year. They only return five starters on defense, but the defense was a huge problem area last year.

The Falcons averaged 15.9 points per game on defense two years ago. Last year they allowed 33.5 points per game. It isn’t very often you see a drop off of that magnitude. The offense will score points. Can the defense stop anyone?

Team Strengths

Matt Johnson was expected to be a star for Bowling Green last year, but he only played in one game before being injured and out for the season. James Knapke did a great job filling in. Johnson is back for his junior season, and I expect him to take over again as the starter. Regardless of who starts, Bowling Green is set at the quarterback spot better than anyone else in the MAC.

Another spot where they are set is wide receiver. Chris Gallon will return after two injuries (he was their top receiver in 2012), and he joins Roger Lewis and Ryan Burbink as a tremendous trio of pass catchers. Ronnie Moore and Gehrig Dieter will see the field a lot this year as well. Look for Bowling Green to have four and five receivers sets very often thanks to this depth.

The offensive front is tremendous. There isn’t a line in the MAC with more experience. Look for the Falcons line to be great in both pass blocking and run blocking schemes.

The special teams unit of Bowling Green is something many will overlook, but you shouldn’t. They are going to win several games this year because of this unit.

Team Weaknesses

You’ll notice I’ve listed essentially the entire offense as a team strength, and I could just list the entire defense as a team weakness. Bowling Green lost their top four tacklers from a year ago.

The loss of Gabe Martin leaves them without their best defensive player at the linebacker spot, and it leaves them without a defensive leader. Three of their top four linebackers overall are gone, so I see this as a real problem area in the year ahead.

Bowling Green allowed five yards per carry last year. It’s hard to win close games when you are giving up huge chunks of yardage on the ground like Bowling Green did last year. I don’t see any reason to believe that this team will be able to stop the run this year either though. The defensive line is undersized by today’s standards, and I expect them to be pushed around by big offensive fronts.

Bowling Green 2015-2016 Prediction: 7-6

I definitely like over 5 for the season win total, though you’ll be laying a lot of juice to get it. Bowling Green has an extremely tough non-conference schedule, but they should do well in the MAC. They have easily the most explosive offense in the conference, and with veteran skill position guys I see them making the plays needed in the clutch.

Bowling Green might start slow, but it’ll make a run in the MAC.
