Why To Bet On VMI

This game might seem like a mismatch in Army’s favor, but that’s really not quite true. The Keydets of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) very nearly won last year at Army. VMI fell by a narrow 22-17 margin, and the visitors from Virginia drove down to the Army 34-yard line with 20 seconds left. However, that’s as far as the Keydets were able to go. Nevertheless, the encouraging performance has to give VMI and head coach Sparky Woods a lot of belief and self-confidence heading back to Michie Stadium on the banks of the Hudson River.

A few things are worth noting about that five-point loss to Army. First of all, Army quarterback Trent Steelman hit 11-of-14 passes. If VMI could hold Army to just 22 points on a day when Steelman threw the ball really well, imagine what the Keydets could do to the homestanding Black Knights if Steelman is off his game. The other thing to point out about last year’s VMI-Army encounter is that the Black Knights lost four fumbles. VMI will have to pounce on more Army turnovers this year if it wants to have any chance to win. This isn’t a complete mismatch, but it still is a game between an FBS team from Army and an FCS team from the state of Virginia. VMI must be plus-three in takeaways when this day is done. If last year’s game truly is an indicator of what will happen this year, then the Keydets could genuinely pull off the shocker in West Point.

Why To Bet On Army

The Black Knights are a better team than the one which barely escaped VMI last season. Steelman is presiding over an offense that scored at least 35 points in three straight games before an Oct. 16 loss to Rutgers. Army isn’t fumbling as much this season and is showing signs of ripening into a bowl-level team under second-year coach Rich Ellerson. Army still has trouble finishing games, but the Black Knights have been very authoritative in their four wins this year, triumphing by an average of 15 points per victory. As long as Army gets out of its own way, executes the triple-option offense with a modicum of efficiency, and avoids putting the ball on the turf, the Black Knights should have little problem with VMI. Army played horribly last year and still managed to win. Just think of how this game will unfold if Army plays airtight ball and doesn’t give the visiting Keydets any chance to seize momentum or leverage.

How The Game Will Play Out

Army will play a relatively clean game, surrendering no more than one turnover. VMI will be outclassed in the trenches, and the Black Knights will pile up at least 35 points if not more. If there’s a number attached to this game, take Army to cover it.
