It still seems like a very long time until the BCS bowls kickoff on January 1.  While there is definite interest in the Championship game, to me the most interesting after that is the Rose Bowl featuring unbeaten TCU against Wisconsin.  Perhaps no team has been more dominant than the Badgers of late while TCU has answered every question throughout the season, completing another undefeated campaign.

This is their last year outside the BCS equation so tit will be interesting to see if they have the same level of intensity/desperation that they have showed in the past.

The other BCS games present some interesting matchups but unless Connecticut topples the Sooners they main;y some well matched teams with few dominant storylines.

With the Oregon Ducks and Auburn Tigers out front as championship contenders for so long this might not be the year many cry for a playoff but I think it is just the opposite.  none of the other matchups really stir up much enthusiasm which in my mind begs for a playoff system.

Rose Bowl

January 1
Wisconsin vs TCU (-2.5)

I am not a bowl matchup expert but I thought Stanford would get the Rose Bowl bid with Oregon moving to the Championship game.  I know they are moving to the Big East and all but I think that Wisconsin (assuming they win) would be the least challenging other than playing Connecticut for the Horned Frogs.  The key to this one will be the Badger’s strength vs TCU’s speed.  If this game were in Madison instead of LA I think it would be a different story but I think TCU will not be pushed around and as a result could dominate.  The hard part for the Badgers is going to be the pace of the game.  The Big Ten for the most part plays a slower game but TCU will speed thinks up.  I don’t think we will see another 70 point performance for the Badgers.

Score Prediction:  TCU 33 – Wisconsin 21

Fiesta Bowl

January 1
Connecticut vs Oklahoma (-17)

On the surface and by the spread this is the biggest mismatch in the BCS.  It is too bad for UConn that they are becoming the brunt of some jokes instead of being allowed to bask in their Big East glory, finally.  The key question you have to ask is will the Huskies be able to run the ball against the Sooners?  F.Y.I. –  OU is giving up 152 yards per game on the ground – 66th in the country. If they can then they can stay in the game if not this could be the biggest rout in BCS history. Odds are this will play somewhere in the middle, but remember who Boise State beat in their BCS buster – The Sooners. They haven’t always performed well in big games and their motivation might be off considering the opponent.

Score Prediction:  Oklahoma 45 – Connecticut – 24

Orange Bowl

January 3
Stanford vs Virginia Tech (+1)

Both of these teams have had remarkable seasons.  For Stanford, they have achieved at a level the program hasn’t seen in a long time.  They had Oregon down early but couldn’t hold.  If they had they would have probably swapped places with them.  For Virginia Tech things couldn’t have looked bleaker early on but now they are riding an 11 game win streak into the Orange Bowl after dominating the ACC.  These teams have never met and have no common opponents so handicapping this one is a real eyeball test.  Surprisingly it is Stanford which appears to be the more physical team.  The Cardinal have been a statistical monster this year and hold the advantage in many categories…except experience.  This is rareified air for Jim Harbaugh and Co while Frank Beamer and the Hokies are no stranger to the BCS.  Will that matter?  With the short spread get down on who you like now.  Don’t wait.

Score Prediction:  Stanford 27 – Virginia Tech 24

Sugar Bowl

January 4
Ohio State vs. Arkansas (+3.5)

For a game not featuring an outright champion this one is kind of juicey.  Ohio State is a bit of a mystery this year.  They lost to Wisconsin and their best win might have been against a pretty unpredictable Miami team.  Yet they are still the favourite against an Arkansas team that beat bowl bound teams the last four weeks of the season and only lost to Auburn and Alabama.  This is another matchup where there is no history.  There will be a contrast in styles though.  Ohio State has one of the better defenses in the nation while the Razorbacks are known for offense.  QB Ryan Mallett’s former team, Michigan, can’t beat OSU but I think he can lead the way to victory against the Buckeyes in an upset.

Score Prediction:  Arkansas 42 – Ohio State 27  (I know…shocker)

BCS Championship

January 10
Auburn vs Oregon (+3)

For the first time in a while I think it is safe to say that the system worked in terms of matching the top two teams for the Championship.  Although both of these squads can play defense this one should see lots of points and big plays and be a very fast paced game.  It looks like the early action is favouring Auburn as the spread has jumped a half point from the opening line.  There is no telling what might happen over the next few weeks to this line but at the current number I think Auburn is the play.  However, if it gets much bigger I might reverse field like LaMichael James and back Oregon (I am reserving that right).  Given everything we have seen of Newton and Auburn this season it seems like they won’t be denied.
