A win on the road against No. 25 Minnesota on Saturday in the battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe would do get them a little closer. However, their Big Ten rival the Golden Gophers, have won four straight and are 5-1 at home.

The Badgers (8-2) will bring its top-notched rushing attack to TCF Bank Stadium, which has three individual rushers that have topped 100 yards, including the tandem of Melvin Gordon and JamesWhite who have rushed over 1,000 yards apiece.

Wisconsin amassed 554 yards on the ground – the second-highest total in team history – in its recent 51-3 dismantling of Indiana last weekend. White rushed for a career-high 205 yards while Gordon ran for 146 yards on 13 carries – including a one-yard touchdown.

It was Wisconsin’s fifth straight win since a narrow loss at No. 3 Ohio State. However, catching the Buckeyes in the Leaders Division is doubtful even with a win on Saturday, but it would be a solid finish. Just what they need to secure a bowl bid.

But it’s going to take more than offense to get by the Gophers who are on a roll and will be well-rested from a 24-10 win over Penn State on Nov. 9.

The Gophers (8-2) have relied until recently on quarterback Philip Nelson, who has completed 63 percent of his passes while throwing for seven touchdowns with no interceptions during the team’s four-game winning streak/

But as of late, running back David Cobb’s has been a key cog in the Golden Gophers new found running game, and has recorded four straight 100-yard rushing efforts and has 405 total yards in his last two contests.

Cobb and the Gophers will meet their match in a Badgers team however, which is seventh in FBS in rushing defense, allowing just under 100 yards per game.

Matt’s Free Prediction

This is a pivotal game and there will be plenty on the line Saturday between these two rivals.

The Gophers own a slim 58-56-8 advantage in the most-played FBS rivalry, but the Badgers have won nine consecutive meetings. I think the edge out a win here to make it 10.

Wisconsin 31, Minnesota 28
