Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: ASU Sun Devils

For the longest time, Arizona State was the football school and its southern rival Arizona excelled on the hardwood, but Mike Stoops and the Wildcats are turning that on its head. Lo and behold, Dennis Erickson coaches the second-best BCS school in the state.

Surely, Sun Devils fans in the Phoenix area are none too sunny about that fact.
ASU has some players, but in a bumper-to-bumper Pac-10 conference, it will be tricky for it to make much headway this season.
Team Strengths:
The defense has a couple bona fide studs in LB Vontaze Burfict and CB Omar Bolden. Burfict, a sophomore that the Sun Devils pilfered from the likes of Southern Cal, has unbelievable size (6”3, 245 lbs) for his age and should really emerge in 2010. Defensive tackle Lawrence Guy is also an animal.

Senior K Thomas Weber is a former Groza Winner and can put the exclamation point on any last-second contest.
Team Weaknesses:
The quarterback situation was grim last season, but that doesn’t mean it should be hunky-dory overnight. Sophomore Brock Osweiler and junior Steven Threet both have terrific size, but Osweiler isn’t a difference-maker and Threet, a Michigan transfer, didn’t bolster his case with his downright pathetic play in the maize and blue.
After Burfict, ASU’s linebacker corps should be spotty; losing last year’s leading tackler Mike Nixon will be tough to negotiate.
Someone also needs to step up at tailback for the Sun Devils, because the pickings look relatively slim going into September.
2010-2011 ASU Football Prediction: 5-7
Arizona State has the pleasure of playing road games at Wisconsin, Oregon State, Washington, California, USC and Arizona.
Even looking at the entire slate, the Sun Devils’ schedule is as tough as it comes in the conference, so an ambiguous offense is the last thing to inspire confidence week-to-week.
There are doubtlessly some players on this team who will be a joy to watch, but even with some improvement, ASU is near the cellar of the Pac-10.
