Zips vs Volunteers NCAA Football Spread/Handicapping

There is no way to sugarcoat it, Akron is one of the worst programs in the nation right now – no matter how badly they beat FCS Morgan State (66-6) last week.

Akron

In two games against FBS competition they have two losses against UCF and FIU – the latter a tight one.  Now they venture to Knoxville to face what should be an embarrassed and riled up Tennessee team.

Their only real hope is that Tennessee might be looking past them.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Akron QB Dalton Williams has thrown for more than 1000 yards in just three games – nearly half of that came last week against Morgan State.

The same goes for running back Jawon Chisolm and his numbers.  This team really lacks for talent right now.  To give yourself a chance against the big boys you have to be able to some big plays.

Long live the fond memories of QB Charlie Frye and when this team actually competed well in the MAC.

These two teams have met just once, back in 1989 with the Vols winning 52-9.  That kind of outcome seems likely yet again though I am not sure the Zips can keep up their end of the bargain by putting up 9 points.

Tennessee should be nice and ripe for a solid whooping after last week and Akron is the perfect opponent. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Tennessee

The Vols vs. Gators rivalry used to be a good one,  in the same way their game was last week good, before Florida totally took over.

From the middle of the third quarter on the Vols gave up 24 unanswered points, serving up a Gators win and helping to establish the pecking order in the SEC East.

Some viewed this as a coming out party for Tennessee but I always thought otherwise.

Mainly because I was bullish on Florida though.

To beat Florida the Vols needed the kind of performance from QB Tyler Bray that proved he was NFL material – he didn’t.  He will have a great chance to get back on track against Akron with his pair of pro potential receivers in Justin Hunter and Cordarelle Patterson.

The Tennessee defense should have little trouble stopping the Zips attack unless they are still demoralized by what happened last week.

The Vols need this one to get their mojo back before a visit to Georgia next week.  Lucky for them no matter how much they might be overlooking the Zips they don’t really have the stuff to put a scare in them.

FYI Vols have a killer schedule the next month:  @Georgia, @Mississippi State, home against Alabama, then @ South Carolina.

Ouch, they might be lucky to finish the season at .500.  You can see why the SEC can get two teams in the Championship game.
