Week 10 CFB Handicapping: Akron Zips vs. Miami RedHawks Prediction

Akron Zips vs Miami RedHawks NCAA Football Gambling Lines

Last year, the Miami University RedHawks enjoyed a magic carpet ride of a season under then-coach Mike Haywood.

Having won just one game in the 2009 season, Miami was not expected to make any kind of splash in 2010. However, the guidance of Haywood and an uncanny knack for crunch-time playmaking enabled the boys from Oxford, Ohio, to take the Mid-American Conference by storm.

Miami got the break it needed when Ohio University lost to Kent State on the final weekend of the regular season, giving the RedHawks the MAC East Division championship and a berth in the league’s title game against heavily-favored Northern Illinois.

No one gave Miami a chance, but a 4th-and-20 conversion in the final 90 seconds of regulation kept a last-ditch drive alive. Shortly thereafter, the RedHawks scored a touchdown with just under 35 seconds left to stun NIU and claim the conference crown. Miami then won the GoDaddy.com bowl over Middle Tennessee to complete a remarkable gridiron journey.

This year, it was hard to expect Miami to rise to the same standard of achievement it attained in 2010. Sure enough, the sledding has been difficult for the RedHawks under first-year head coach Don Treadwell, the former offensive coordinator at Michigan State.

Miami is just 3-5 through its first eight games, and while the RedHawks are still very much in the thick of the MAC East Division race, their toughest games lie ahead in the final weeks of the season. A three-game gauntlet against Temple, Western Michigan, and Ohio will take the measure of this team. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

In light of the fact that its only MAC wins have come against 2-7 Buffalo and 2-6 Kent State, it’s hard for Miami to be particularly optimistic.

However, in this one game against Akron, Miami should fancy its chances.

Akron is clearly one of the 15 worst programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision, and that’s probably being charitable. The Zips went just 1-11 last year, and at 1-7 through eight games in 2011, they’re well on their way to replicating that mark. Head coach Rob Ianello has clearly not been able to turn around this program in two seasons on the job.

The Zips are no better than 94th in the FBS in four basic statistical measurements – rushing yards per game, passing yards per game, points scored per game, and points allowed per game.

Even though Miami is dead last in the nation – 120th out of 120 FBS teams – in rushing yards per game, this is a mismatch. Take Miami without a moment’s hesitation.

Pick: Miami University
