Mountain West Football Previews: Air Force
Head Coach: Troy Calhoun
2009 Record: 8-5
Air Force Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000
The Air Force Falcons went 5-3 in Mountain West Conference play in 2009. All three of their losses came against very good opponents in TCU, Utah, and BYU. It was the second straight year that the Falcons lost to only those three teams inside their conference.
Troy Calhoun has done a terrific job with this team. Will this be the year they can get over the hump and move into the top three of the Mountain West?

Air Force has plenty of returning players on both sides of the ball, but they also have some huge holes that leave plenty of question marks around this team. This was the third ranked team in the nation in rushing yards in 2009.
Don’t expect this team to change their game plan anytime soon, but just a little more balance in their offense might help them get to where they want to be.
Team Strengths:
The backfield is full of talent with Jared Tew and Asher Clark running the football. Tew is less flashy, but he is as consistent as you will find. Clark is the type of guy that could break the long gainer every time he touches the ball.
The defensive secondary of the Falcons is absolutely tremendous. Reggie Rembert and Anthony Wright pair up to form one of the best cornerback duo’s in all of college football. Safeties Jon Davis and Brian Lindsay are very solid and are good at keeping plays in front of them.
Both the kick return and punt return teams are very good. Rembert is one of the top kick returners in the country and Wright averaged a stunning 18.1 yards per punt return in 2009.
Team Weaknesses:
All five of their offensive linemen will be brand new starters. Air Force usually doesn’t have trouble getting offensive linemen that fit into their zone blocking scheme, but they have to be a little concerned with this much youth up front.
The defensive line is an area of large concern for the Falcons, because they simply aren’t big enough up front. Only one of their defensive linemen weighs over 240, which is almost unheard of in Division I football today.
There is the possibility that there could be a quarterback controversy in Colorado Springs this year. Tim Jefferson has been the starter and appears to have the edge, but Connor Dietz has looked good in the spring and could push Jefferson in a big way. The Falcons need to get behind the guy who they believe gives them the best chance of winning.
2010-2011 Air Force Falcons Football Predictions: 8-5
The key to the season for Air Force is the success of their offensive and defensive lines. If they can’t stop the run on defense and can’t run the way they normally do on offense, they will struggle mightily. I suspect the Falcons offensive line will step up, but I do worry about the rushing defense. The key game to watch will probably be the battle with Utah at home on October 30th.
I think Air Force knocks off one of the top teams in the Mountain West, but still finishes with the same 8-5 record.
