Cappers 2009 BCS Matchup Preview

The 2009 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) National Championship featuring the Florida Gators versus the Oklahoma Sooners is set to be a dandy…

BCS National Championship Today – NFL Tomorrow

This year’s match-up features 2 explosive programs that are at the top of their respective games right now. The Florida Gators went 12-1 and are led by 240 pound quarterback and 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow. Conversely, the Oklahoma Sooners possess the current Heisman trophy holder in silky-smooth quarterback Sam Bradford. This outstanding championship game is a must-see event. Both teams have been edge-of-your-seat, high-flying acts all year and are not strangers to scoring a lot of points. Oklahoma has scored over 60 points in its last 5 games, including destroying Missouri in the Big12 championship game 62-21 to claim its 3rd straight Big 12 title. Florida has been steamrolling opponents for weeks and impressed the BCS honks by handing undefeated Alabama its first loss 31-20 in the SEC title game.

Urban Meyer is attempting to solidify his legacy as one of the best coaches ever as he leads the Gators to its 2nd BCS championship game in 3 years, having won already in 2007. Urban Meyer is a big game coach and his teams perform at their best when the stakes are the highest. After Meyer guided Utah to an undefeated season in 2004,

he had the choice of coaching at Notre Dame or Florida. He passed up his “dream job” at Notre Dame and hasn’t looked back ever since.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops’ record speaks for itself. A record of 109-23 (.826) and six Big 12 championships in 10 seasons, Stoops has reason to be confident heading into the big game. And he has added incentive as well, the Sooners are on a current 4 game BCS losing streak. There are also NFL coaching opportunity rumors floating around about Stoops, mainly with respect to the vacant Denver Broncos job. Although Stoops maintains he is solely focused on the BCS Championship Game on January 8, if his Oklahoma Sooners win the title, his resume will be second to none when analyzing coaching candidates.

The championship game will be the centre of attention in the sporting world because of its stars. Thursday will pit the nation’s best quarterbacks against each other, the last 2 Heisman winners, and 2 NFL bound QBs. Tebow looks like a fullback playing at quarterback. He is 6 foot 3 inches and a stout 240 pounds. He simply dominates college games with his mobility and unparalleled ability to pick up 1st downs and keep the chains moving. His balanced attack has been a thing of beauty to watch his credentials are proof that he plays his best when it matters most, and Thursday night will be the biggest game of his career.

This year’s Heisman trophy winner Sam Bradford is the epitome of modern day quarterbacks. He threw for 4464 yards and 48 touchdowns. Bradford has been nothing short of unstoppable. The Sooners have scored at least 45 points in every game this season except two and it is no secret that as Bradford goes, so does Oklahoma. His stock has never been higher and he can improve his future employment opportunities with a Championship on Thursday. Bradford is a franchise quarterback and will be drafted high in this year’s NFL draft, possibly as high as first-overall if he has the performance he is capable of.

Indeed there are many stories to follow leading into the BCS National Championship Game on Thursday, January 8, 2009. There are 2 great teams with great supporting casts, phenomenal coaches, and superstar caliber collegiate athletes. There is a great deal of hype heading into the game which will be everything we expect it will be.
