Villanova travels to Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati to play the Bearcats in a Big East match-up that has suddenly become a must win for the Wildcats.

A few weeks back Villanova was sitting pretty atop the Big East. They were ranked #3 in the country and a virtual lock for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. After losing three out of their last four games including a 95-77 beating at the hands of Syracuse this past Saturday things have certainly changed. They are now 23-5 overall and 12-4 in the conference, #9 in the polls, lost the Big East regular season title, and at best will end up as a #2 or #3 seed in the NCAA’s. If there ever was a time to get things pointed back in the right direction it is tonight against Cincinnati.

Against the Orange, they were able to jump out to an early lead but it did not last long as their shots failed to fall and they were beaten badly underneath. Their top scorer, senior G Scottie Reynolds ended the night with 16 points and as a team they were a dreadful 8 of 28 from three point range. Junior G Corey Fisher had 14 points and Junior F Antonio Pena added 13 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.

Cincinnati started the season 11-3 but has struggled all season long in conference play. They come into this game 16-12 overall and just 7-9 in the Big East. They would need a win tonight and a strong showing in the Big East Tournament just to have any chance of making the NCAA’s. The Bearcats have played better their last few games, taking Marquette to OT in a 76-79 loss and hanging around until the end in a 68-74 loss to #8 West Virginia but they cannot seem to get the W against any of the quality teams they have faced. Against the Mountaineers they actually led by six points at the half, but were completely dominated underneath in the second half, getting outrebounded 41-30.

Through 28 games their leading scorers are freshman G Lance Stephenson, who is averaging 11.6 points per game and senior G Deonta Vaughn, who is averaging 11.3. Sophomore F Yancy Gates is averaging 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

It is crunch time for both these teams and if Villanova has any serious aspirations about contending for a national title they cannot afford a lackluster performance against Cincinnati tonight. They have one more regular season game after this and the Big East Tournament to try and regain some momentum heading into the Dance, but it all has to start tonight.

The Wildcats should roll in this one.
