NCAA Men’s Basketball Conference Previews – The SEC

The 2010-2011 NCAA men’s basketball season is underway and this promises to be another thrilling fight to the finish in the SEC. Kentucky dominated the conference last season and with a whole new crop of talent is back to defend its title.

Perennial powers Florida and Tennessee will chase the Wildcats in the SEC-East while Mississippi State and Alabama appear to be the front runners in the West.

One thing is for sure, whichever teams rise to the top in the SEC will also be ones to watch come tournament time in mid-March.

The following is a look at a few of the top teams in the SEC this season along with their current odds to win the conference as well as a national championship. All odds are supplied by Sportsinteraction.com

Kentucky
SEC East +125
National Championship +750

Head coach John Calipari lost four underclassmen to the NBA from last year’s team, but has reloaded by bringing in the best recruiting class in the nation. This team will feature six freshmen along with junior guard’s DeAndre Liggins and Darius Miller. Two of those freshmen are guard Brandon Knight and forward Terrence Jones. These two will be counted on heavily to keep the Wildcats on top this season, but that could be a tall task given the overall youthfulness of this team. NCAAB Betting

Florida
SEC East +150
National Championship +2000

Florida is locked and loaded this season, returning all five starters from last year’s team that went 21-13. Led by sophomore guard Kenny Boynton, the Gators are aiming much higher this season after last year’s fourth place finish in the SEC-East. Boyton will be joined by senior forward Chandler Parsons and junior guard Erving Walker to form the bulk of the offensive production for this team.

Tennessee
SEC East +350
National Championship + 3000

Tennessee is already off to a rocky start because of various recruiting violations by its head coach Bruce Pearl, but the Volunteers on-court talent should enable this team to ride out the storm this season. Their big three, comprised of freshman forward Tobias Harris and junior guard’s Scotty Hopson and Cameron Tatum should be good enough to keep the Vols right in the thick of things all season long.

Mississippi State
SEC West +200
National Championship +7500

Mississippi State should easily come out on top in the SEC-West with players like senior guard Ravern Johnson and senior forward Kodi Augustus leading the way. The Bulldogs should also get a boost with the return of sophomore forward Renardo Sidney. He is currently serving a nine game suspension for accepting improper benefits while still in high school.

With a wealth of experience and talent, the Florida Gators have an excellent opportunity to leap-frog the youthful Kentucky Wildcats to win the SEC this season as long as they avoid getting caught up reading their press clippings and play up to their potential on the court. The Pick: Florida + 150
