Purdue is ranked fourth in the country and a lot is expected of the Boilermakers as they open up the Big Ten season. The conference will be reasonably competitive, with Michigan State having gone to the national championship game last season, and the likes of Wisconsin, Northwestern and Ohio State all nationally-ranked in one of the two polls, it’s going to be a tight conference race, and will present some interesting college basketball betting situations.

Iowa is not expected to be one of the contenders for the Big Ten title or an NCAA tournament bid. Todd Lickliter has not made it happen on the Iowa City campus the way he did at Butler, and his team, which prefers to slow down the pace, has had a hard time stopping the opponent from shooting for a high percentage – 46.5%, in fact – and that has resulted in some games where the Hawkeyes let things get away from them.

Two of the in-state rivals, Northern Iowa and Iowa State, have beaten them by double digits, and Texas beat them by 25, a resounding defeat in college basketball betting. The leading scorer, Matt Gatens, is shooting less than 42% from the field.

Purdue has scored victories over Tennessee, Wake Forest and Alabama, and has a non-conference game scheduled with nationally-ranked fellow unbeaten West Virginia scheduled for New Year’s Day. One of the things that characterizes their approach is that they have balanced scoring with E’Twaun Moore, Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson all averaging in double figures.

Johnson, who played with Lickliter’s son in high school, is the enforcer, with almost seven rebounds a game and 23 blocked shots. One of the Boilermakers’ key guys is the low-scoring Chris Kramer, who is one of the Big Ten’s defensive standouts and will probably get an assignment guarding Gatens.

Iowa is a player short because Anthony Tucker, the second-leading scorer, was suspended after an arrest. Jarryd Cole also has a sore ankle and he’ll have his hands full taking care of Johnson.

The Boilermakers are not the kind of team Iowa is going to over-achieve against, and even though we were not overwhelmed by some of their recent appearances in Iowa City, we recognize that this is a better Purdue team than those editions. We’re lay8ing the points with Purdue, the 13-point favorite in the BetUS NCAA college basketball betting odds.
