This first round matchup will be in Oklahoma City, OK on Thursday at 7:10

There is no recent history between these two opponents.

It is an unprecedented year for the Mountain West Conference with 4 bids after neither BYU or New Mexico made it to the championship game.

UNLV made it to the final and survived the loss entering the tournament as an eight seed. Not bad for a team that wasn’t sure whether it was top 25 material or not. The Rebels are a hard team to handicap coming into this one.

Leading scorer Tre’von Willis is banged up but should play while it looks like Kentucy transfer Derrick Jasper will not mend in time to suite up. This team is not very deep team and it would be have been huge boost to have him back.

In a disappointing season he was still their second best rebounder. Northern Iowa is not an explosive team so Lon Kruger will rely on UNLV’s solid defense to keep them in the game hoping they can win it late.

Northern Iowa is kind of like New Mexico. You see the record but you just aren’t sure what to think.

Sure they beat up on the Missouri Valley Conference but that league was down this year. Its best win out of conference was against Siena, who made the tournament, but that is not something a really good team would hang their hat on.

The best thing UNI has going for it is experience. They have loads of seniors including leading scorers Jordan Eglsleder and Adam Koch.

The two also provide a beefy inside presence that will be hard for the Rebels to match. It was a surprise to see the Panthers seeded so low but it will not be a surprise to see them advance to the weekend.

Befitting the seeding UNLV is a sligh favourite in this one at -1.

Betting Trends:

Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games.
Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games as an underdog.
Runnin’ Rebels are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 non-conference games.

Free Runnin’ Rebels vs. Panthers CBB Pick

8/9 games are usually a toss up but I think UNI got jobbed a bit with the low seed. UNLV will likely slow the pace which suits the Panthers just fine. This game will be close until the final minutes when Northern Iowa will seal the deal.

Score prediction: Northern Iowa 61 – UNLV 54.
