Now, with the Final Four upon us, both have made it to New York City to prove they can win on a neutral court, punching their tickets to the championship round against either SMU or Clemson.

Minnesota

The Minnesota Golden Gophers were considered one of the favorites to win the NIT entering the tournament, and while the No. 1 seed they received was an honor, they were also considered one of the biggest snubs from the NCAA Tournament.

Entering this contest, Minnesota is coming off of an 81-73 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. More importantly, the Golden Gophers have already faced off against the Florida State Seminoles once this year. They took down the ACC foe back on Dec. 3 to the tune of 71-61.

One area where Minnesota has the edge is depth. The Golden Gophers’ depth was the biggest difference when the team took down the Seminoles back in December, and the team will look to take advantage with its talent once again in the NIT.

Florida State

As deep as the Minnesota Golden Gophers are, the Florida State Seminoles have been presented with a matchup against a weakened opponent. Minnesota will reportedly be without center Elliot Eliason in the starting lineup, and Maurice Walker will be taking his place.

Unfortunately for the Seminoles, Elliot will not be ruled out at this time. In fact, Walker is the more proven scorer, giving the Golden Gophers a silver lining in this situation.

On the season, Florida State has proven to have an edge over Minnesota in terms of defense. The team is allowing 66.4 points per game, which is good enough for 75th in the country compared to 115th—Minnesota’s ranking at this juncture.

The problem is that the Golden Gophers have the edge offensively; albeit it a small one.

Expect this game to be a nail biter, as both teams have experienced nearly every step of the way. The Golden Gophers have a slight edge entering the contest, and that theme should remain true when the scores are final and the clock strikes zero.

Prediction: Minnesota 73 – Florida State 70
