The #5 seed Michigan State Spartans face the #4 seed Maryland Terrapins in the second round of the Midwest regional with tip-off slated for 2:30 P.M. Sunday, March 21st in Spokane, Washington.
In early February, Michigan State (25-8) lost three straight conference games and their season suddenly seemed head in the wrong direction.
They were able to right the ship somewhat winning five out of their last six to gain a share of the Big 10 regular season title with a conference record of 14-4 but were knocked out of the Big 10 Tournament in their first game by Minnesota 67-72 in overtime.
If there is one major problem with this team it would be consistency. At times they have played well enough to beat any team in the country and at times they have looked just plain bad.
Led by junior G Kalin Lucas, who is averaging 15.2 points per game and senior F Raymar Morgan, who is averaging 11.4 points and 6.4 rebounds they have a solid starting five and a decent bench. In their first round 70-67 win over 12th seed New Mexico State, Lucas scored a career high 25 points and junior G Durrell Summers added 14 as the Spartans, aided by a controversial lane violation call at the end of the game advanced to the second round.
Maryland (24-8) has not gotten nearly as much recognition as Duke has this year, but battled them tooth and nail all season long to gain a share of the ACC regular season title with a conference record of 13-3 and actually beat the #3 ranked Blue Devils 79-72 at the end of the regular season. After losing to Georgia Tech 69-64 in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, there were some question marks on how well they would do in this tournament.
ACC Player of the Year senior G Greivis Vasquez leads the way, averaging 19.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He has single handedly led his team to victory more than once this season.
Another player that can do some damage is senior F Landon Milbourne, who is averaging 12.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
All in all, this team has four starters that are averaging in double figures and has a good chance to go fairly deep within the Midwest region if they play to their capabilities.
In their first round 89-77 win over 13th seed Houston, freshman F Jordan Williams set career highs in points with 21 and rebounds with 17.
Vasquez ended the night with 16 points and six assists.
This should be a good, close game that will come down to which team can play to their talent level the best.
Right now, Maryland seems to be able to do that a little better than the Spartans can, so go with the Terrapins to win and advance to the Sweet 16.
