Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Georgetown Hoyas 7:00 P.M Friday, March 12th

Big East Conference Tournament Semi-Finals
Marquette +3 (-110)
Georgetown -3 (-110)
Over/Under 131

#5 seed Marquette takes on the #8 seed Georgetown Hoyas in the Big East Tournament’s semi-finals tonight at Madison Square Garden. Both teams are coming off huge upsets that has them just one win away from advancing to the finals.

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, the Marquette Golden Eagles (22-10) are peaking at just the right time. They finished the regular season by winning nine of their last 11 games and have now beaten St.Johns 57-55 and upset Villanova 80-76 in the conference tournament. The one common theme throughout this stretch has been their ability to keep their games close and grind out a win. In 20 Big East games this season, 13 have been decided by four points or less. Down the stretch they are 7-1 in games decided by three points are less. Against the Wildcats, the game was tied at 30 at the half and remained close until the very end.

Senior F Lazar Hayward’s three pointer with less than two minutes to play gave them the lead for good and a ticket to the tournament’s semi-finals.

Hayward ended the game with 20 points and seven rebounds and Darius Johnson-Odom scored a team high 24 points.

Georgetown (22-9) finished the regular season ranked #22 in the country but because of a 10-8 conference record fell all the way to the 8th seed in this tournament. After disposing of South Florida 69-49 in their first game, they faced #1 seed Syracuse in the quarterfinals, a team they lost to twice in the regular season. After falling behind by three at the half, they grabbed a 60-59 lead with a little less than 11 minutes to play and never looked back on their way to a 91-84 upset win. The Hoyas were led by junior F Chris Wright’s game high 27 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Junior G Austin Freeman is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 17 points per game and sophomore C Greg Monroe is averaging 16 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Hoyas chance in this game as well as how far they go in the NCAA’s clearly revolves around these three.

Marquette is rapidly becoming the one team that nobody is going to want to face in the big dance. They know how to keep it close and simply find ways to win games, no matter who they are playing. The Hoyas helped themselves tremendously for seeding in the NCAA Tournament with their win over the Orange, but their run in this tournament ends tonight.
