NCAAB: Spartans vs Bulldogs Predictions

College basketball betting sees the Michigan State Spartans taking on the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday March 20 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cappers Picks provides complimentary handicapping picks all NCAA Tournament long.

The Spartans hope to be peaking at the right time while Georgia looks to prove the SEC deserved all of those bids.

Michigan State

The Spartans under Tom Izzo have one of the strongest brands in college hoops, which is why their early performance this year was so maddening. They enter the tournament playing their best basketball coming within a hair of taking the Big Ten conference tournament from Wisconsin.

Their seeding seems a little low but they do have those eleven losses and there is maybe one NBA player on their current roster. Betting against Izzo in the NCAAs is not a great strategy. Only three times has he lost in the first round.

When MSU is at their best it is a true team effort with Travis Trice bombing away, Brandon Dawson crashing the offensive boards and Denzel Valentine showing off his varied game.

They are going to need all three in top form if they want to knock of a hungry Georgia team. The talent level of the Spartans just isn’t as high as it has been in the past and beyond those three I am not sure who would step up.

Georgia

The Bulldogs are not a great team but twice they put a scare in the likes of Kentucky.

They don’t seem to do any one thing particularly well but they are experienced and don’t mind it too much if things get physical, which is good for this contest against Michigan State.

One thing I don’t like is that they have not won a game against any team in the field and that they are not a good free throw shooting team (under 70%). Closing out games has been a challenge for this group all season long.

Though I do think good teams need an inside presence the real reason I like the Dawgs is their experienced backcourt of Kenny Gaines and Charles Mann (both juniors).

They are the kind of steady, physical players who can make a difference and are unlikely to come out of this game. Marcus Thornton gives them an inside presence.

He is a throwback player who has gotten better every year he has been on campus and will not want his senior season to come to an end.

NCAAB Betting Trends:

  • UGA are 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. Big Ten.
  • Under is 6-2 in MSU last 8 NCAA Tournament games.
  • MSU are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. Southeastern.

NCAAB Betting Prediction:  Georgia +5.5

This will be one of the tightest games of the round of 64, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised to see it come down to a final heave.

NCAAB Score Prediction:  Michigan State 65 – Georgia 64

I like the underDawgs in this one.
