NCAA Men’s Basketball Conference Previews- Conference – USA
The 2010-2011 men’s college basketball season is underway and once again the top teams in Conference-USA will be out to prove that they can compete with any of the best teams the major conferences have to offer.
Memphis boasts one of the best recruiting classes in the nation while Texas-El Paso is looking to follow-up on last year’s successful run. Teams such as UAB and Southern Miss are waiting in the wings to make their move as it should be another exciting race to the top of the conference all season long.
The following is a look at a few of the top teams in Conference-USA this season along with their current odds to win a national championship. All odds are supplied by MySportsbook.com
Memphis
30/1
Memphis’s roster is filled with quite a few new faces as seven freshmen are on the roster. A few of the younger players to watch are guard’s Joe Jackson and Chris Crawford along with forward Tarik Black. Veteran leadership will be provided by junior guard-forward Wesley Witherspoon, who has already established himself as one of the more potent scorers on this team. The big question for the Tigers this season is how quickly head coach John Pastner can get all this young talent to gel into a team.
UTEP
200/1
UTEP boasts one of the more experienced lineups in the conference with eight seniors including guards Randy Culpepper, Christian Polk, and Julyan Stone. These three should provide the bulk of the scoring while forward Jeremy Williams and freshman center John Bohannon should round out the starting five. Look for junior guard-forward Gabrial McCulley and senior center Claude Britton to provide some quality minutes off the bench. The Minors are loaded and have a very good chance at repeating as conference champions.
UAB
200/1
Junior forward Cameron Moore and sophomore forward Ovie Soko will be counted on to provide a strong inside presence for UAB this season, while the backcourt will be anchored by senior guards Aaron Johnson and Jamarr Sanders. The Blazers also have a couple of younger players such as sophomore guard Dexter Fields and freshman guard Quincy Taylor to add some solid depth to the roster.
Southern Miss
OFF
Southern Miss is the long shot in this group but more than capable of pulling off some upsets along the way. The Golden Eagles return all five starters from last year’s team that went 20-14. The backcourt is led by senior guard R.L Horton and junior guard Angelo Johnson, while senior forward Gary Flowers could be the best all around player on the roster.
Senior guard Sai’ Quon Stone and sophomore guard LaShay Page should provide most of the production off the bench.
Memphis is probably the team with the most potential in C-USA, but UTEP is long on experience and should continue to flourish under new head coach Tim Floyd, who previously coached at USC. This race will go down to the wire with all four of these teams staying in the mix, but in the end my money is on the Minors to repeat as champions.
The Pick: UTEP
