Michigan Wolverines vs. Duke Blue Devils
In a match up of one team trying to get back to their glory days and one that has never left being a national powerhouse 8th seed Michigan takes on top-ranked Duke with the winner advancing the Sweet 16. NCAAB lines have Duke as big 11.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 136.
In their second round games both teams won in routs and while it is no surprise Duke beat 16th seed Hampton 87-45 it was a surprise that Michigan laid a 75-45 beat-down on 9th seed Tennessee.
Both teams covered the spread in their second round games and for the season Michigan was 21-8 ATS and Duke was 20-14 ATS.
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is going for win #900 in this game and if he does it Duke will be heading to the Sweet 16 for the 20th time in the last 26 seasons. For Michigan to keep that from happening they will have to play like they did against Tennessee. In that game the Wolverines played great defense holding UT to only 34.9% shooting, 16.7% 3-pt shooting, and on offense they shot almost 52% from the floor.
Michigan played a solid game on offense spreading the wealth with 4 starters scoring in double figures led by G/F Zack Novak with 14 points. A couple of other reasons they won are that they out-rebounded Tennessee by 11 boards and they forced the Volunteers into 18 turnovers. Can they do that against Duke? I don’t think so.
Duke had similar stats in their win over Hampton holding them to under 35% shooting and they shot over 53%. You could say that Blue Devils’ G Kyrie Irving passed his first test in playing his first game since December being the high scorer with 14 points. The Wolverines now have to key on him, as well as F Kyle Singler and high scoring guard Nolan Smith. One player they really have to worry about is 6’10” F Miles Plumlee, who had 13 boards in the win over Hampton.
This is not a good match up for Michigan, as they only rank 253rd in the nation in scoring and 300th in rebounding. Plumlee and Singler will kill the Wolverines on the glass and Duke will run up the score and cover the big spread.
