Arizona Wildcats vs. Texas Longhorns Preview

Both teams did not play their best games in the second round of the Big Dance and when 4th seed Texas faces 5th seed Arizona the team that can play to their strength will likely win this game. NCAAB lines have Texas as 5.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 138.5.

In their second round games Texas slipped by a pesky Oakland team 85-81 and Arizona blocked a last second shot to preserve a 77-75 win over Memphis.

Neither team covered the spread in their opening Big Dance game and this season Arizona was 17-15-1 ATS and Texas was 20-10 ATS.

Texas overcame a an Oakland rally to win by 4 points and they got a double-double from their big stars of Tristan Thompson (17 points 10 boards) and G/F Jordan Hamilton 19 points 10 boards. The Longhorns had a good game on offense and while they played great 3-pt defense they allowed Oakland to shoot 44% from the field. They did play well on Oakland star C Keith Benson holding him to only 15 points and if they can do the same against Arizona’s big gun of Derrick Williams they will win this game.

Stopping Williams is easier said than done, as the PF scored 22 points and grabbed 11 boards in the win over Memphis and G Lamont Jones chipped in for 18 points. It is important that Wildcats get good guard play from Jones and the rest of the backcourt, as they will likely get open looks from deep with Texas keying on Williams.

Arizona must step in this game, especially on the glass. Texas ranks 5th in the nation in rebounds per game while Arizona only ranks 193rd. Williams will need help on the boards in this game.

The Wildcats must play better defense than they did against Memphis when they allowed them to shoot 49% from the field and 40% from beyond the 3-pt arc.

Williams is a stud for Arizona, but 2 stars is always better than one, which is what Texas has in Thomson and Hamilton. The Longhorns will win this game with those 2, as they will dominate the boards and that will be the key to them advancing to the Sweet 16 and covering the 5.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Arizona is 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and Texas is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5.

Pick: Texas -5.5
