Preseason favorites to compete for the Mountain West Conference crown, the UNLV Rebels will attempt to get back on track after being derailed by 24th ranked Louisville its last time out as they tipoff against Santa Barbara on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

After bolting out of the starters block with a 9-0 start the Rebels responded to playing its first ranked team by falling to the Cardinals 77-69 behind a dismal second half performance on Saturday in the Billy Minardi Classic.

Tre’Von Willis led the Rebels with 17 points and Oscar Bellfield added 16, as UNLV blew its best lead of the season.

The Rebs, who entered the game shooting 54 percent, were in command 45-36 early in the second half, but it all slowly unraveled with 10 turnovers and 12 missed shots in the second period of play.

Meanwhile, the Gauchos have won two of their last three including two consecutive with an 80-69 thumping of Santa Clara 11 days ago. The team is shooting a phenomenal 79.4 percent from the field.

Junior forward James Nunnally, who leads Santa Barbara with 21.9 points per game, scored a career-high 34 points while Jaime Serna had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the win for the junior’s first career double-double.

The 6-foot-5 Nunnally has averaged 28.3 while shooting 65 percent in the last three contests while draining 10 of 18 from 3-point range.

Orlando Johnson added 16 points and five rebounds for the Gauchos who held Santa Clara to just two field goals over an 11 1/2-minute span in the second half.

UNLV leads the series 28-7, but has lost the last three meetings including a 63-60 in 2007 and had another three-point loss a season earlier at the Thomas & Mack Center.

UNLV has a talented roster and numerous experienced players from last season’s NCAA Tournament squad and get balanced scoring and top-notch defense from a nine-man rotation, but has averaged 20 turnovers in its last two games. Something it cannot afford to do against a Santa Barbara squad that can get up the court quickly on the counter.

The wing play will be key with both teams have talented wing players, and it will interesting to see how the Gauchos frontcourt can get deals with forward Chase Stanback who’s averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds a game.

Nunnally and Johnson are on a roll, and this one has upset written all over it.

CBB Gambling Trends:

UCSB are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
UCSB are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.
UNLV are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Wed. games.
Over is 7-3 in UNLV last 10 non-conference games.

Free Pick: Gauchos 76, UNLV 72
