VCU Rams vs. Butler Bulldogs

Butler was the Cinderella of last season’s NCAA Tournament and this year VCU is and these 2 teams will battle it out for the right to play for the National Championship. NCAAB lines have Butler as 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 133.5.

In their games in the Elite 8 VCU pulled off a HUGE shocker beating Kansas 71-61 and Butler beat Florida 74-71 in OT.

The Rams and their road to the Final 4 has been impressive and their closest game came against 10th seed Florida State while they beat 6th seed Georgetown, 3rd seed Purdue, and #1 seed Kansas all by double digits. Conversely, Butler has not had an easy time to get to the Final 4 winning their 4 games by an average of 3.3 points per game.

VCU plays a fast-paced game and they like to really bomb away from deep. I mean, in the win over Kansas they made 21 shots total and 12 of them were 3-pointers. Overall, in the game they did not shoot that great, but they shot a 3-pt FG% of 48%. Rams’ F Jamie Skeen had 26 points and 10 boards hitting 4/7 of his 3-point shots against Kansas and he and PG Joey Rodriguez are the key players in this game. Butler has to contain Skeen and not allow Rodriguez to dictate a fast pace.

If VCU can play D like they did against Kansas they will win this game. In that game they held the Jayhawks to only 35.5% shooting from the floor and 9.5% shooting from beyond the 3-pt line (2/12).

Butler has been here before, well last season to be exact, and they are led by G Shelvin Mack and F Matt Howard and these 2 combined to score 41 points in the win over Florida. Mack and the Bulldogs can also drain the 3 and VCU cannot allow the Bulldogs to get open looks from deep.

If Butler can force VCU into playing a half-court game they will be in great shape. VCU will not win the battle of the boards only ranking 301st in the nation in rebounds per game AND even though they won against Kansas they had 10 fewer rebounds.

The Rams have had a great run, but it will end at the Final 4. Butler will be ready for them, which Kansas was not, and they will play good perimeter D and not allow VCU to play at a blistering pace. The Bulldogs will play a good all-around game and they will win and cover the 2.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

VCU and Butler have covered the spread in every one of their games in the tournament so far and the Bulldogs have an Over/Under record of 2-2 and VCU has an Over/Under record of 2-2.

Pick: Butler -2.5
