The Michigan State Spartans barely squeaked past Oakland on Saturday, and now the seventh-ranked Volunteers will attempt to do the same when they meet up with the Grizzlies in Knoxville on Tuesday.
The Volunteers have had its share of uncertainty entering the 2010-11 season after coach Bruce Pearl admitted to recruiting violations and misleading NCAA investigators. That led sanctions by both the school and the SEC that left the Vols in a state of chaos while Pearl serves an eight-game suspension during the conference season. But instead of collapsing, Tennessee–an Elite Eight team a year ago—has started off the year with a perfect 7-0 record, including beating a pair of top 10 teams in Villanova and Pittsburgh.
Scotty Hopson and Melvin Goins have carried the team this far both offensively and defensively with Hospon the scoring leader with nearly 18 points per game. 
Hopson had a game-high 27 points in this past weekend’s win in Pittsburgh over the Panthers in the SEC-Big East Invitational, while Goins chipped in 19 points and five rebounds. Cameron Tatum was clutch, knocking down huge shots and finishing with 14 points.
But it’s not only the upperclassmen that are chipping in, Tobias Harris is contributing with 15.3 points and six boards a game.
As for the Grizzlies, they are hoping that their painstaking schedule will help them to prepare for their second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance as they have played three other ranked opponents this far nearly knocking of then-No.7 Michigan State this past Saturday before falling 77-76. Oakland got off to a good start, taking early leads, and trailed by just four points at halftime, but was doomed by 14 turnovers and their 11-for-22 performance from the free-throw line.
NBA prospect Keith Benson had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Larry Wright scored 21 for the Summit League defending champions. Drew Valentine had 11 points while Hudson and Hamilton added 10 apiece.
Oakland has played well against and led then-No.16 Illinois at halftime earlier this month before falling 74-63, and trailed by only four after 20 minutes at then-No.14 Purdue in an 82-67 loss in late November.
The Golden Grizzlies have lost 26 of 27 games against ranked opponents since 1998. Tennessee is 40-1 in non-conference home games since 2005, losing to Gonzaga 89-79 in overtime Jan. 7, 2009.
While the Grizzlies have been impressive, and statistically match up very close with the Vols, they just don’t seem to be able to play a complete 40 minutes of basketball.
