Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas Jayhawks Preview

The Big 12 Championship is set and the Kansas Jayhawks (31-2) can likely wrap up a top seed in the NCAA Tournament if they can beat the Texas Longhorns (27-6).

In the semifinals of the Big 12 conference tourney yesterday Kansas beat Colorado 90-83 and Texas beat Texas A&M 70-58.

This season Texas has been a better betting team going 20-8 ATS while Kansas is only 15-15-1 ATS. Kansas has not covered the spread in their 2 games in the conference tourney and Texas has covered in their 3 games and is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.

Earlier this season Texas snapped Kansas’ 69 home court winning streak beating them 74-63. The Jayhawks have won 4 of the last 5 Big 12 conference tournaments and from 2006-2008 they beat Texas in the championship game.

In their win over Texas A&M yesterday the Longhorns shot just under 50% from the floor and their 2 stars of Tristan Thompson and Jordan Hamilton combined for 31 points and 21 boards. The main reason Texas won is that they played lock-down defense on the Aggies holding them to 35.4% shooting an they killed them on the boards (39-28). Defense is how Texas beat Kansas earlier this season holding them to only 35.9% shooting.

Kansas’ big guns of the Morris twins combined for 40 points and 21 boards in their semifinals win over Colorado, but their defense did not play well allowing Colorado to shoot 49.1% from the floor. In the loss to Texas earlier in the season the Morris twins only combined for 26 points and 12 boards and they will be counted on for offense and rebounding in this game.

Since Marcus and Markieff Morris are both forwards it is key that the guards of the Jayhawks knock down the open J, so Texas does not pack the lane to stop the twins.

The team that can play defense on the star tandems of the opposing team will win this game. Kansas may want to key on Thomson more, as he has 3 double-doubles in the 3 tournament games for the Longhorns.

Kansas has not played that great in the conference tournament so far, but they will not allow Texas to beat them for a second time this season. The Jayhawks will play well on both ends of the court, win this game, and wrap up a coveted #1 seed in the Big Dance.

Betting Trends

Texas is 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games against teams with a winning percentage above 60% and Kansas is 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games.

Texas has a lot of good young (Canadian) talent, but the Morris Bros. are animals and it showed in this game. I think Kansas is the Duke west of the Mississippi, what a rock-solid consistent program.
