Most people assume the matchup between the USF Bulls and the Pitt Panthers on Wednesday night will be nothing short of a blowout between a top-ranked team hosting an opponent with just two conference wins.

But a closer look at the Bulls season shows just how competitive they’ve been, especially against top teams.

South Florida’s tough losses include a double-overtime defeat to BYU, an overtime loss at UConn, and a one-point loss to Marquette just last week. Granted the Bulls are coming off a 23-point beat down by Notre Dame on Sunday.

Augustus Gilchrist will be asked to lead the way for USF, as he is averaging 11.9 points per contest. He needs to have a stronger effort than the one he had against the Fighting Irish when he went 1-for-10 from 3-point land.

No Ashton Gibbs in the lineup has not been a problem for the Panthers the last two games. Gibbs leads the club at 16.3 points per game, good for sixth best in the Big East despite missing the last two contests with an MCL sprain. One player that has stepped up in his absence is senior guard Brad Wanamaker. He scored 21 points in the victory against Villanova on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Panthers are leaders of the toughest conference in basketball in large part because they are superior on the glass. They average 41.4 rebounds per contest, which is fifth best in the entire nation. Pittsburgh is also unselfish with the basketball, as their 18 assists per game as a team ranks them fourth best in the country. Wannamaker is averaging five assists and five boards per contest. They are led on the boards by Gary McGhee, who is fourth in conference, at eight rebounds per game in just 22.2 minutes per game.

Since losing their only conference game of the season to Notre Dame late last month, the Panthers have won four straight – three of which have been away from home while South Florida enters the night 2 ½ games behind Seton Hall for 12th place in the conference. Only the top 12 of the 16 conference teams will play in the Big East tournament next month in New York.

CBB Betting Trends:

Under is 7-2 in SOFLA last 9 Wed. games.
Under is 13-4 in SOFLA last 17 road games.
PITT are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
PITT are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. Big East.
Over is 12-4 in PITT last 16 home games.

Matt’s Free Pick:  Pittsburgh – The Panthers appear focused on securing the top spot in the conference, and while there is some danger in looking past the Bulls to a showdown against St. John’s on Sunday in New York, the Bulls may be overmatched.
