Butler Bulldogs vs. Milwaukee Panthers Preview

A spot in the Big Dance is up for grabs tonight in the Horizon League championship game when the Milwaukee Panthers (19-12) host the Butler Bulldogs (22-9). NCAA lines have Butler as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 136.5.

In the Horizon League semifinals Butler beat Cleveland 76-68 and Milwaukee beat Valparaiso 70-63.

This season Milwaukee has been a better betting team at 18-13 ATS and Butler at 14-13-2 ATS. Butler is only 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games at Milwaukee.

Butler lost both games to Milwaukee this season, but it is always hard to beat a team 3 times in a season in college hoops. When these 2 teams met right after the New Year in Milwaukee the Panthers laid a 76-52 beat down on the Bulldogs. In that game the Bulldogs could not hit water if they fell out of a boat shooting 38.9% from the floor while the Panthers were en fuego shooting 55.3%.

Milwaukee does not have a good defense ranking 226th in the nation in opponents’ points per game (70 ppg) and in their last 3 games they have struggled giving up an average of 77 ppg. That is not good facing a Butler team that ranks 64th in the nation in scoring and is hot winning their last 8 games.

The Panthers main goal in this game is to contain Butler F Matt Howard (16.7 ppg 7.9 rpg). If they can do that they will be in good shape. Howard and G Shelvin Mack (15.3 ppg) form a solid inside/outside combo and while both struggled in the loss at Milwaukee the duo combined for 41 points in the OT loss at home to the Panthers a few weeks back.

One of the main reasons Butler has been on fire is their defense. They rank 101st in the nation in opponents’ points per game, but in their last 3 games they are giving up 7 fewer points than their season average.

Anthony Hill (15.6 ppg 6.5 rpg) is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Panthers and he combined for 40 points in both wins over Butler this season. The Bulldogs will key on him and he will need help on offense from G Tone Boyle (13.2 ppg) and F Tony Meier (11.9 ppg).

Butler was the Cinderella of last season’s NCAA tourney making it to the finals and they will not be denied their shot at making the Big Dance by losing this game. Butler will win this game with their defense, as Milwaukee will not be able to handle their pressure. The Bulldogs will win this game and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Trends:

Butler is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS win and Milwaukee is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Pick: Butler -3
