The Blue Demons will try not to slip out of this year’s field of 68, by snapping their 10-game losing skid against the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats in a Big East clash on Tuesday night.
DePaul has already played Cincinnati back on December 28 and lost 76-60. Last season, the Blue Demons lost to the Bearcats 74-69. Over four years, DePaul has gone 3-3 against Cincinnati, and 1-1 at home.
However, this year’s DePaul squad is fighting their own “demons,” and is coming off a nail-biter to the Cardinals in conference play, 61-57 on February 5. It’s the closest they’ve been to a win since losing by just two-points to West Virginia on Jan. 4. The other nine losses have come by margins of 10 or more including one at nearly 30, and two at over 30 point margins. To say the Blue Demons have been getting blown out is an understatement.
DePaul lost this game because Louisville controlled free throw shooting and also won the offensive rebounding battle. Brandon Young was the leading scorer for the Blue Demons with 15 points in 31 minutes.
As for Cincinnati, winners of two of its last six, they are coming off two consecutive losses including a 71-59, conference loss to Pittsburgh on February. The Panthers got too many quick points off threes, with 21 of their total points coming from three-point range while spreading the ball around racking up 15 assists.
The Bearcats have one win in conference on the road all year. Missing Yancy Gates is really going to hurt the team’s efforts. He violated team rules and has been suspended, and it is unlikely that he will be back in the fold for Tuesday’s game against the Blue Demons. That leaves Cincy with just a single double-digit point scorer –Dion Dixon.
Matt’s Free Pick: The good news is that the Bearcats play great defense and do have depth and players that can score off the bench on a regular basis. That should be enough to beat a De Paul squad that really would love to just scratch a win or two together in conference this year.
