Why To Bet On Iowa State

It’s still fairly early in the season, but the Cyclones, under new coach (and former ISU basketball star) Fred Hoiberg, are off to a 7-2 start. It’s true that Iowa State recently dropped a 76-73 decision to Cal on its home court this past Saturday, but in many ways, that rugged battle against an upper-tier Pac-10 team could strengthen the Cyclones for this date with archrival Iowa.

Iowa State is also going to benefit in this game from the fact that Iowa is in a transitional year. The Hawkeyes are only 5-4 in their first nine games, a result of a switch from one style to another. Last year (and in the previous few years), Iowa was coached by former Butler boss Todd Lickliter, a coach who preferred a slow tempo and grind-it-out halfcourt offense. Iowa’s new coach is Fran McCaffrey, who took over in Iowa City when Lickliter was fired.

McCaffery came from Siena, where he led the Saints to three consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championships, and accordingly, three straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

In two of those appearances, Siena was able to win its first-round game and create a major national splash. McCaffery ran an up-tempo style in Albany, New York, and so he’s eventually going to shake up the culture at Iowa. This year, though, that means growing pains for the program. Iowa will struggle to adapt to McCaffery’s methods in year one.

Why To Bet On Iowa

The Hawkeyes aren’t the only team with a new coach. Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg is taking over after former coach Greg McDermott couldn’t turn the program around in Ames.

Iowa State languished in the lower half of the Big 12 Conference while the Kansas schools, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M, and Baylor all surged upward in the conference standings. If Iowa is going to have difficulty adjusting to Fran McCaffery, ISU will also have to take some extra time to learn Hoiberg’s own methods.

The Cyclones do own a shiny 7-2 mark, but it has come against lower-tier teams in college basketball.

One thing to note in a comparison of Iowa and Iowa State is that Iowa roughed up Northern Iowa, the Missouri Valley Conference team that upset Kansas in last year’s NCAA Tournament and made the Sweet 16 before bowing to Michigan State. Indeed, Iowa smothered UNI by a 51-39 count. Meanwhile, Iowa State lost to that very same Northern Iowa team, 60-54. If that’s any indication, Iowa should be in good shape on Friday.

How The Game Will Play Out

This will be a rugged and ugly game dominated by defense. Iowa is playing at home, and the win over Northern Iowa has to provide a lot of confidence for a team that has already lost four games, one of them against a very bad Wake Forest squad. Iowa is not an impressive team, but it will beat Iowa State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday.
