This game is in the South regional bracket and will be played in Jacksonville, FL. The opening round game was played on Tuesday night in Dayton, OH and Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated the Winthrop Eagles to get the chance to square off against Duke.
The ultimate Cinderella game of the tourney has never given us a shocker to date (the play-in game was concocted in 2001). It is therefore not too bold to expect the Blue Devils to win this game going away.
Duke is set up well for success in this game and further along in the tournament thanks to a combination of dead-eye shooting and strong play down low. Nolan Smith, Jon Scheyer and Kyle Singler can dial it up beyond the arc; the brother duo of Miles and Mason Plumlee can wear opponents down in the low block.
Senior Brian Zoubek provides some much-needed relief as the coveted seven-footer with a European-sounding name. Duke can run, shoot, play scrappy when they need to in addition to calling on reasonable depth from its bench.
Coach K can sense that his team is heating up at the right time; the Blue Devils have won 11 of their last 12. Moreover, Duke looks very focused and very hungry – perhaps something that was missing in disappointing recent seasons.
Hated in-state rival UNC had a miserable season and things have thus far been breaking right for Duke to snag ultimate Tobacco Road glory.
The Golden Lions have a productive guard trio in Terrance Calvin, Savalance Townsend and Tavaris Washington, but it just won’t be enough.
Basically, nothing short of divine intervention will help Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeat Duke in this archetypal David vs. Goliath match-up.
