Team records:
Texas A&M: 23-8 SU, 18-9 ATS
Kansas: 30-2 SU, 12-16-1 ATS

The No. 23 Texas A&M Aggies will tip off against the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in the semifinal round of the 2010 Big 12 Conference Tournament on Friday evening at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

The Jayhawks edged out the Aggies 59-54 in the only regular- season meeting between these two teams back on Feb 15, and owns a 15-1 advantage in the all-time series. The winner of this contest will advance to Saturday’s title game to challenge either Baylor or Kansas State.

Fourth-seeded Texas A&M is playing well and closed out the regular season with three consecutive wins. They most recently made quick work of 12th-seeded Nebraska beating them 70-64 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Leading scorer Donald Sloan (18 ppg) came through with 23 points, while Khris Middleton contributed 17 points and B.J. Holmes 11 points in the win. Sloan has been a major key to the success of the Aggies this season as the squad’s only double-digit scorer. TAMU led the Huskers by nine points at the half but allowed them to rally in the second permitting Nebraska to shoot 50 percent from the floor.

Fortunately for A&M, it was able to knock down nine three-pointers to hold their advantage on the scoreboard.

The Aggies are averaging a respectable 71.9 ppg while limiting foes to 64.4 ppg coming into tonight’s contest.

What can you say about the Jayhawks? They are the odds on favorite to claim the national title for the second time in three years, and are the top seed in this tournament. They notched the programs 2,000th win with by pounding Texas Tech in yesterday’s quarterfinal round by an 80-68 final, knocking them out of contention. Five players, including four starters, reached double figures with Sherron Collins, the team’s top scorer, leading the charge with 19 points and six assists. Freshman sensation Xavier Henry added 13 points, while Marcus Morris and big man Cole Aldrich posted 12 points apiece.

Aldrich also ripped down 18 rebounds and blocked three shots in the win. Overall this season, Kansas is averaging a conference leading and fifth-best overall 82.2 ppg, while holding opponents 63.7 ppg on just 37.7 percent shooting.

They are outrebounding opponents by nearly seven boards per contest while shooting a stellar 40.7 percent from three-point range.

The Aggies has only won four of the 17 Big 12 Conference Tournament games it has played and is still searching for its first league title. The Jayhawks have notched six Big 12 Tournament titles, at least twice as many as any other active member of the league. They won three consecutive crowns from 2006-08, and they are 26-7 all-time in this event.

Kansas is a powerhouse of talent that is well coached, and I just can’t see the Aggies being able to stop the onslaught.
