ACC 2013-2014 NCAA BB Power Rankings

1. Duke (+175)

Duke has to be at the top of the list. The Blue Devils lost their top three scorers from a year ago, but their returning talent is better than most people realize. The newcomers coming onto the scene this year will be excellent. Jabari Parker is a constant highlight reel, and he is going to make life miserable for opposing coaches.

Duke has plenty of outside shooters, and the Blue Devils will be able to run the floor.

2. Syracuse (+250)

The Orange are always a brutally tough team to play because of their terrific zone defense. The ACC hasn’t seen much of this zone, and it will bother a lot of teams this season. Tyler Ennis has the potential to be a star right away. C.J. Fair has a versatile game that has NBA scouts excited about his potential.

3. North Carolina (+350)

I would have ranked North Carolina second if P.J. Hairston’s situation was clearer. Hairston is an important part of this team, and he can’t seem to stay out of trouble. James Michael McAdoo could have a very special season for the Tar Heels. North Carolina has speed to burn, and we know the Tar Heels know what to do with speed.

4. Virginia (+800)

Virginia returns all five starters from a very good team last year. This is one of those teams that is very smart and wins basketball games by doing the right things fundamentally. Joe Harris is an elite scorer, and this Cavaliers team can lock it up on the defensive end. The Cavs will be a very tough team to beat this season.

5. Notre Dame (+650)

You have to love Notre Dame’s backcourt combination of Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins. No team in the conference has better ball-handlers. The Fighting Irish will miss Jack Cooley down low. Notre Dame gets both UNC and Duke at home this year, and that gives them a boost.

6. Maryland (+1500)

Maryland was a team that improved nicely throughout the season last year, and despite the loss of Alex Len, I expect this team to be highly competitive this year. Transfer Evan Smotrycz will help out at the four spot, and he can knock down shots from outside.

7. Boston College (+2000)

Boston College is flying under the radar in the offseason, but this team could be very dangerous. Last year’s team showed flashes of brilliance and their top six scorers (who were all freshmen or sophomores) are all back this year. Olivier Hanlan is a budding star. There might be early value on this team.

8. Pittsburgh (+1000)

Jamie Dixon is a very good coach, so I’ll put this team at eighth in the conference despite a definite drop off in talent from past years. The Panthers might be on the bubble this year.

9. Florida State (+2000)

Look for the Seminoles defense to bounce back from a bad season last year. They still probably won’t crack the top half of this conference.

10. Georgia Tech (+4000)

Brian Gregory’s team is full of youngsters who should be better than they were a year ago. The Yellow Jackets have limitations, but they will be improved.

11. Wake Forest (+5000)
12. North Carolina State (+5000)
13. Miami (+5000)
14. Clemson (+7500)
15. Virginia Tech (+10000)
