The Atlanta Hawks were questioned early in the regular season if their hot start was just a fluke, or if they were the real deal. Well, fast forward to April 19th, and they’re going to begin the playoffs as the number 1 seed in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Atlanta never broke stride once they took over the top spot, as they ran through some of the best in the NBA. Now, they’ll try to avoid an upset as they look to overcome their lack of playoff experience.

For the Nets, they needed every win they get to get into the playoff picture. It in fact came down to the last day, where the Pacers couldn’t take out the Grizzlies, thus giving the Nets the final spot in the East.

Can the Nets pull off one of the biggest upsets of all time? Or will the Hawks just keep on rolling?

(8) Brooklyn Nets vs. (1) Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks set a franchise record for wins in the 2014-2015 season with 60. They essentially went from the bottom of the East from the 2013-2014 season all the way to the top in 2014-2015. Now, they’ll look to avoid a first round upset as they get set to do battle with the under .500 Brooklyn Nets.

The season series story is one to forget for Brooklyn. The Hawks absolutely demolished Brooklyn not just sweeping the series 4-0, but winning those games by an average of 17 points.

The only chance Brooklyn will have at pulling off this epic upset will be if they can consistently out rebound, out hustle, and just simply outwork the Hawks from start to finish. That’s going to be a tough task as Brooklyn really hasn’t shown they have the ability to do that.

The Hawks dropped the final 3 games of the regular season, but more importantly, got some star players some key rest as they prepared for their playoff run. The main guy that got some much needed rest was PF Paul Millsap. The power forward is averaging 16.7 points a game, to go along with 7.8 rebounds. He has been battling a shoulder injury and will wear a protective pad on it.

With Millsap still banged up, it will give Brooklyn a chance to see if Robin Lopez can control the paint. Following the all star break, Lopez averaged 19.7 points and 9.2 rebounds a game. With Atlanta not having anybody as tall as the 7 foot Lopez, he could be the main ingredient to a Nets’ upset.

The Nets will be without F Mirza Teletovic for at least the first two games of this series as he battles a problem with blood clots. Also for Brooklyn, G Alan Anderson, who missed the last 7 games of the regular season, is expected to play in game one on Sunday.

If anything, Atlanta knows what goes through the mind of an 8 seed. They faced a similar situation last year as the East’s 8 seed when they took on the Indiana Pacers in the first round. The Hawks nearly pulled off the upset after stealing a couple road games, but ultimately fell in game 7.

The Pick: Atlanta in 4

Even though Brooklyn does have a chip on their shoulder as nobody is picking them or giving them a chance, Atlanta is just on a different level than Brooklyn.

The Hawks should route the Nets both times in Atlanta and then put the series to bed in Brooklyn. The Nets may take a home game, but even that is unlikely.

Atlanta cruises here and gets a chance to rest up while the other Eastern Conference match ups finish up.
