The Grizzlies are going to miss the playoffs, and they’ll look back at close losses – two narrow defeats in their games against Charlotte and a one-pointer at home against the Lakers in the game that could have meant a lot to the franchise – but this team is on the rise.
The front office weathered the firestorm of protest that developed a few years back when the Grizz sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers, it caught a huge break when 20-10 man Zach Randolph came on board and decided to become a good citizen, and it nearly was able to overcome a dreadful 1-8 start greased mainly by the unfortunate signing of Allen Iverson and the mayhem that it caused.
The irony of the Iverson signing was that it was made to make the franchise relevant, and the powers that be didn’t know that they were already there. Instead, Iverson missed much of training camp with an injury (real or made-up), joined the Grizz a few games in and then demanded to start ahead of emerging PG Mike Conley. That AI was fading faster than an ice cream cone in the Tennessee summer heat didn’t matter.
Memphis was smart enough to cut it losses by cutting ties with Iverson, though, and since that poor start has played nearly .600 ball. The Grizz are better than Houston and New Orleans right now, and next season will probably be better than aging San Antonio and will be a chic pick to dethrone Dallas in the Southwest Conference.
A lot, of course, depends on health, and the core of the team – Randolph, Conley, O.J. Mayo, Marc Gasol and high-flying forward Rudy Gay – has missed precious few games to injury. One thing to keep an eye on – Gay is a free agent and reportedly has his sights set on New York.

Warriors vs. Grizzlies Free Pick: One thing about young teams – most everyone is playing for a big contract, so the chances of it going in the tank late in the season are minimized. And Memphis still has a puncher’s chance at a playoff spot and shouldn’t let up too much against the dysfunctional Warriors. Golden State is in full tank mode, and hardly put up much of a fight Friday night in giving up 147 points to a San Antonio team that doesn’t like to push the ball too much. Eleven is a big number, but Memphis has a decent chance of covering.
