Bucks And Warriors Tangle In Oakland, In Search Of A Spark

This is a sad pairing of two teams who are stuck several games below .500, albeit for different reasons. Milwaukee has been slammed by injuries this season and will bring a depleted team to the San Francisco Bay Area. Guard Brandon Jennings, who lit up the NBA in his rookie season last year, is still recuperating from an injury. He’s playing, but he was given an 18-minute limit in Monday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The outlook is also murky for one of Jennings’ teammates, center Andrew Bogut. The man who missed the 2010 NBA Playoffs – and who would have enabled Milwaukee to beat the Atlanta Hawks in a first-round series – is questionable (at best) for this game after getting dinged up against the Clippers. Beyond those two injuries, shooting guard John Salmons – who came from Chicago to boost the Bucks’ offense in the middle of last season – has missed roughly three weeks as well. A lack of health is preventing Milwaukee from assembling a full roster.

For Golden State, a losing season – and another playoff-free campaign – are almost inevitable at this point. The Warriors, however, weren’t expected to make the playoffs. A new ownership group came in before the season began. Former coach Don Nelson exited, reducing the acrimony in the team’s locker room. What didn’t improve, though, was Golden State’s defense, which is once again in the bottom tier of the league. The Warriors entered Wednesday, Feb. 2 with the 28th-rated defense in the league, surrendering over 106 points per game. It seems as though it’s going to require another season of reorganization to remake the roster and then make a legitimate run at a playoff spot in 2012. For now, there are no quick fixes in Oakland. Players might be healthy compared to the Bucks, but the organization is still getting rid of toxins of various kinds. The NEW BetOnline

Why Milwaukee Will Win:

The Bucks are averaging under 92 points per game. They defend extremely well but simply cannot put the ball in the bucket without Salmons and Jennings. Corey Maggette has been picking up the slack as a lead scorer, but Milwaukee’s depth has just not been sufficient to compensate for the team’s thinned-out roster. Players like Luc Richard m bah Moute, who scored 10 points Monday against the Clippers, need to score 15, and other players who haven’t been contributing anything need to fill the stat sheet with something other than zeros (except in the realms of fouls and turnovers). This isn’t rocket science; the Bucks need more and bigger contributions from every able-bodied player.

Why Golden State Will Win:

It’s just as simple for Golden State: The Warriors need to defend. They lag behind most of the NBA in defense and have persistently been bedeviled by their softness at the defensive end. Monta Ellis is lazy on defense, and Stephen Curry – though being a hard worker and a fine scorer – has an undersized body that is vulnerable to taller and more muscular two-guards. The Warriors’ help defense and rotations must get better. It’s a work in progress, but it has to move forward for this team to be successful.

Outlook & Pick

The Warriors are a poor defensive team, but Milwaukee is a lousy offensive team without fully healthy performers. A reduced-strength Jennings hampers this team, and the likely absences of Salmons and Bogut will hurt even more. The Bucks just won’t be able to produce enough quality to outlast the Warriors or most NBA teams. Take Golden State on Thursday.

Pick: Warriors -7
