While they don’t seem as complete a team as the group that reached the NBA Finals last season, the Magic are playing solid basketball of late. Don’t believe me? Look no further than their last game, a 101-95 victory over the first-place Cleveland Cavaliers.
Perhaps because Vince Carter is stealing shots, Dwight Howard’s scoring average of 18.5 points is his lowest since 2006-07. But the Magic are smartly starting to rely on him more again and it’s paying major dividends. Over his last three games, D12 averages 28 points, 16.3 boards and 5.3 blocks. Just ridiculous. He also leads the NBA in rebounding and blocks per game for the season.
Facing the powerhouse Magic, do the in-transition Rockets have a chance? They’ve lost five of six and three straight at home. Part of their struggles can be attributed to an adjustment period after their three-team megadeal at the trade deadline last week that brought Kevin Martin to town and sent Tracy McGrady to Madison Square Garden.
Houston generally plays Orlando tough, having won six of its last eight meetings with the Magic, but the Rockets are somewhat broken right now. They’re also lacking confidence at home. Even when they win, they barely win, as they’re a disgusting 1-11 against the spread in their last 12 home games.
Given the Magic’s hot play – more specifically, Dwight Howard’s Superman act – and the Rockets’ discombobulation, I doubt they have much of a chance tonight.
