Every year, the Spurs seem to fiddle around in the first half of the season, conserving their energy before a second-half surge to a division title. This year, they’re taking longer than ever to come around, to the point where a playoff berth is hardly guaranteed. They’re seventh in the West, tied with eight-place Portland and four games up on Memphis. Their opponents tonight, the New Orleans Hornets, sit just five games back.
The conditions are certainly right for a Spurs victory tonight. They haven’t played since Monday; that rest is crucial considering that they’ll now play 15 times over the next 25 days. Not only are they fresher, they really have the Hornets’ number at home. They’ve won 10 of the last 11 meetings at the AT&T Center and even beat the Hornets in New Orleans by 14 points on Monday.
Darren Collison has been a major bright spot for the Hornets in Chris Paul’s absence. The rookie has averaged 22.2 points over his last 12 games did manage 15 assists on Monday against the Spurs.
But the Hornets aren’t playing good defense right now. They’ve lost five of six and they’re allowing 107.6 points per game on 50.5 per cent shooting over that span. 
Also, in the head-to-head series, the home team has beaten the spread in 12 of the last 16 contests. The fresher, healthier Spurs look like solid bets tonight.
