The Oklahoma City Thunder will look to rebound after a slow start that led to their demise in Game 3, when they host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday night.

After snatching home court advantage with a win in Game 2 in Dallas, the Thunder were stunned in the first quarter as the Mavs stampeded out of the gate to take a 23-point lead in the first 14 minutes of play.

Although Oklahoma City fought its way back into the contest, it was too much damage to overcome, as Dallas turned away a late Thunder rally en route to a 93-87 win.

The Mavericks built a 35-12 lead in the first two minutes of the second quarter, and then clamped down with their signature style defense that was instrumental in winning so many games in the regular season.

After surrendering only 88.3 points per game through the first two rounds, Dallas had allowed the Thunder to average 109 in the first two games. But on Saturday, they were able to shake up Oklahoma City’s transition-based, perimeter-oriented offense, while rattling Oklahoma City superstar Kevin Durant, limiting him to just 22 points on 7-for-22 shooting, including 0 for 8 from 3-point range.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t all roses for Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzski, whose production has been dwindling throughout the series. He’s gone from making 24 of 24 from the foul line and scoring 48 points in Game 1, to managing only 18 points in Game 3. Maybe it’s the close guarding by Nick Collison that’s making the difference.
However, the rest of the Mavs players made up for the German star’s subpar performance, as Shawn Marion chipped in with 18 points while Tyson Chandler delivered a huge effort on the boards with 15 rebounds, despite the Mavs being outrebounded 37-45 on the night.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Oklahoma – Despite the quick start, Dallas once again struggled to sustain its effort as they allowed a much younger Thunder squad to power back into the game in the fourth quarter. Game 3 was all about defense, and I expect the same in Monday night’s contest. Look for Oklahoma to get one back as the teams head back to the Big D knotted up at two.
