Game two of the Western Conference Finals will take place on Thursday night, and for only the second time since 1998, will be without the Lakers or Spurs, as the Dallas Mavericks look to take control of their series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Game one belonged to Dirk Nowitzki who took advantage of 24 trips to the foul line, burying every single one –setting an NBA postseason record for most foul shots made without a miss– while outworking the Thunder defense, draining 12 of 15 from the field.

The German Wunderkind scored 48 points to lead Dallas to a convincing 121-112 win on Monday. But Nowitzki did get some help, as the Mavericks bench once again proved itself with Jason Terry chipping in with a 24-point night and JJ Barea contributing 21 points in just 16 minutes of action.

However, while the Dallas offense looked inescapable, their defense was effectively non-existent, helping the Thunder’s Kevin Durant to a 40-point night. Russell Westbrook was not as good as he has been, but still managed to produce 20 points, but 14 came on free throws. Together, Durant and Westbrook made 32 of 37 free throws on the night.

Despite the loss, the Thunder have to feel pretty good about Game 1 as they scored more than anyone had against Dallas this postseason—by 15 points–and still trailed by just five points with four minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

It’s obvious that a young Thunder squad is still a work in progress, but really showed no signs of being intimidated or backing down.

Much more emphasis will put on defense from both sides in Game 2, which could help OKC, but the individual match ups are likely to start the same way. The Thunxder will assign Serge Ibaka to Nowitski again, but if that fails we could see a carousel of defenders rotate throughout the contest including Nick Collision, Thabo Sefolosha, and Kendrick Perkins.

Recent Trends:
Over is 8-3 in OKC last 11 vs. NBA Southwest.
DAL are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 home games.
Over is 7-1 in DAL last 8 Thu. games.
DAL are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall.
OKC are 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
Underdog is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Dallas – The real variable in this one will be trips to the foul line. I expect another good night for Nowitzki, as the Thunder will need one more game to figure out a defensive strategy that will work in slowing down the big man from Würzburg.
