Wasn’t that long ago that the future of basketball was intertwined with the whims of point guard Chris Paul.

The NBA landscape being what it is, stars are pretty much calling their own shots these days and informing teams where they will be playing, and as the season started Paul was making noise that he would follow the LeBron James and Chris Bosh business model and walk away in the summer of 2012 unless the Hornets stocked up on talent real fast and became a factor in the Western Conference.

NO’s fast start put that talk to bed for a bit, but now as the Hornets prepare for the playoffs and a probable first-round loss to the Lakers, spec will start again on what Paul is thinking and what he might have up his sleeve when his current contract runs out a year from now. Considering the ownership and coaching issues that the team has dealt with, Paul has to be at least a little interested in sticking around and being the face of the franchise for the rest of his career. David West still has legs, Carl Landry is emerging as a third scoring option, and if the Hornets can beef up their bench over the next draft or two, they might be able to fill a void in the West as the Mavs, Spurs and Lakers get older and start to fade.

Paul’s point guard counterpart in Phoenix, Steve Nash, says he wants to remain in Arizona despite all the changes the team has undergone and despite the obvious fact that in his mid-30s, Nash might not have enough game left to be part of the scene when the Suns are able to rebuild.

And rebuild it will be, because anyone with two eyes can tell that Phoenix does not have enough talent to compete. A major re-tooling is in order, and it will take a few free agent signings and a couple of high draft picks to make things work again in the desert.

Finding an eventual replacement for Nash might even be a draft possibility this June.

NBA Trends:

PHO are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Under is 23-8 in PHO last 31 Fri. games.
NO are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Fri. games.
Over is 9-4 in NO last 13 vs. NBA Pacific.
Under is 37-17 in NO last 54 Fri. games.
Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

BEST BET: It’s been an entire month since the Suns have defeated a decent team (Houston), and it was way back on Feb. 23 (at Atlanta) since they have won on the road against a quality team.

Hornets are the pick here, even laying the 5.5.
