While Utah is struggling to put together wins, Memphis holds the top spot in the NBA Southwest division.

Utah

Holding just a 3-8 record in the month of December, the Utah Jazz look to get back on track following a 104-86 loss in Charlotte on Saturday. Things have not been pretty for the Jazz all season as they’ve won back-to-back games just one time. With the exception of Gordon Hayward, the Jazz line up has shown zero consistency and seem to have a different player struggle every night.

This will be the 3rd game for the Jazz in 4 nights. After dropping the first two games of their current 6 game road trip, Utah played their best basketball of the season in back-to-back wins in Miami and Orlando. A win on Monday and give the Jazz a 3-3 road trip, which would be considered quite the success.

Led by Gordon Hayward (18.9 points per game), the Jazz are scoring 96.4 points per contest (22nd). The Jazz struggles come from lack of depth and bench players, as they have nobody coming off the bench who is averaging double figures.

With the offensive struggles a major problem for the Jazz, their defensive effort is doing them no favors. Utah is allowing 101.5 points a game (21st) and opponents are shooting 47.9 percent.

Utah currently holds just a 4-11 record away from home.

Memphis

The only thing that has seemed to slow up the Memphis Grizzlies this season has been injuries. SG Tony Allen has missed two straight games with an eye injury and they’ll most likely be without PF Zach Randolph for a 2nd straight game. Memphis has dropped 2 in a row, but still holds a 1.5 game lead over Houston and Dallas for 1st place.

Although the Grizzlies are not blaming the absence of Randolph as a reason for their 2 straight losses, missing the Power Forward is a big loss for them. Randolph is averaging 16.1 points and 11.4 rebounds a game. With his contributions, Memphis holds the 9th best scoring offense in the league with 102.8 points a game. They also hold the 14th best rebounding numbers with 43.0 a game.

While Randolph is the main target in the paint for Memphis, C Marc Gasol is doing just as much damage. Gasol is scoring 19.6 points a game and grabbing 7.9 rebounds. With Randolph likely out Monday, Gasol will need to duplicate his 23 point, 11 rebound game from Sunday.

Memphis returns home where they are 12-2 S.U.

While they continue to win, they are .500 ATS going 7-7 in the 14 home games.

NBA Basketball Trends:

  • Jazz are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
  • Jazz are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
  • Grizzlies are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. Western Conference.
  • Grizzlies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. NBA Northwest.
