The Philadelphia 76ers travel to the West Coast to face the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena, in Oakland tonight. This is a battle between two teams that are trying to make the best of what has been a disappointing season so far.

Philadelphia’s season could be likened to a roller coaster ride with many more downs than ups. They are 21-34 on the year and are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, 6 ½ games out of the final playoff spot. In the immortal words of Jim Mora, I not sure why I am even talking about “playoffs”. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games, but cannot seem to play with any consistency from one game to the next. Last Friday night they looked like world beaters in a solid 106-94 win over San Antonio. The following night they got their doors blown off in a 90-122 loss to Chicago. In the game against the Spurs, Andre Igoudala scored 20 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and added eight assists. To help seal the win, Lou Williams added 20 points off the bench. Against the Bulls, they fell behind by 19 points in the first half and were never able to make a game of it. Igoudala, the Sixers one man team scored 23 points in the losing effort with little support from anyone else. Through 55 games he leads the team in points per game with 17.2 and in assists with 5.8. Samuel Dalembert is the team’s leading rebounder, averaging 9.6 per game.

Golden State is currently 16-39, second to last in the Western Conference. They are 4-11 in their last 15 games but are actually 3-2 in their last five including wins over Sacramento and Atlanta. In their 108-104 victory over the Hawks on Sunday night, they actually trailed by 17 points after three quarters, but came to life in the fourth to pull out the four point win. Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 32 points and Monte Ellis added 26. Through 55 games Ellis has been one of the bright spots for this team, averaging 25.8 points and 5.4 assists. Curry is averaging 15.2 points and 5.1 assists while Corey Maggette is averaging 20.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Both these teams have become bottom feeders in the NBA, but still have the ability to beat a good team from time to time. The Sixers are not a bad road team (11-17), but the Warriors are definitely a better team when playing in Oakland. Jet lag sets in as the Warriors pull off a rare back to back win.
