In many ways these guys are the Boston Celtics of the West – veteran players hunkered down for one or two more runs at the title before key players have too many wrinkles on their faces and some other talented teams overtake them.

Can Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and the boys drag themselves through an 82-game schedule and four playoff series?

Key players added – Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, DeJuan Blair

Key players lost – None

Maybe. Maybe not. But the Spurs will once again contend in the West all season, thanks to veteran smarts and the arrival of Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess. It’s not often a good team can get two new starters, but that’s exactly what SA has done. Both Jefferson and McDyess will either start or get major minutes in the rotation, offering both scoring and rebounding and at the same time providing cover for the oft-injured Ginobili.

And don’t forget Roger Mason, whose knack for knocking down game-winning 3-pointers last season gave the Spurs huge emotional lifts.

The Spurs will fundamental teams to death. They are amazingly consistent – last season: 54-28 overall, 28-13 at home, 26-15 on the road, 40-40-2 ATS.

Assuming they are healthy in mid-April they figure to shake off last season’s playoff ouster by the Mavs and once again make another deep postseason run.

Surprising stat: Schedule quirk: The Spurs don’t play the Lakers this season until Feb. 8

Strengths: Where to start? SA has a great coach (Gregg Popovich), veteran leadership, talent. And they’re fundamentally sound and rarely beat themselves with turnovers.

Weaknesses: OK, there’s a problem with several key players over 30, and Popovich may monitor minutes a little closer than in the past, especially as the playoffs get closer.

Playoffs? No doubt.
