2009 Shelby 427 Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: The Shelby 427
Date: Sunday, March 1, 2009
Time: 4:46 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 3:30 PM EST on FOX

Preview: There have only been 11 Cup Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, one per year since 1998.The track was reconfigured in 2006 including the installation of a new surface and progressive banking. Drivers like the width of the track and the options for multiple racing grooves, but complain about a rough, bumpy racing surface.Matt Kenseth, winner of the Daytona 500 and last weekend’s Auto Club 500, is vying to become the first driver to win the first three races of the season. A developing story at press time: Five Toyota teams changed engines on Friday, including polesitter Kyle Busch and last week’s polesitter Brian Vickers, who also had to switch engines before last week’s race.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (+400): Johnson rebounded from a dismal Daytona 500 with a top-10 finish in California. He leads all drivers in wins here, going to Victory Lane in three of the 11 Vegas races held to date. Johnson won three straight, 2005, 2006 and 2007, before being unseated by Carl Edwards last year.

2. Kyle Busch (+600): Coming from the rear of the field will just be extra motivation for Busch to drive to the front in front of his hometown crowd. Excluding Kyle Busch’s 41st-place finish in his rookie season at LVMS, his average finish here is a 6.3 with finishes of 2nd, 3rd, 9th and 11th.

Dark Horse:

1. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (10-1): Though Junior struggled at this racetrack with DEI, he finished second in his first race here last season with Hendrick Motorsports. After getting off to a rough start in the first two races this year, a strong run for at Las Vegas is a must to get both Junior and his team the boost of confidence they’ll need as they try to climb from 35th-place in the point standings.

Summary: This will be the first race of 2009 that won’t be affected by rain, though strong gusty winds could be an issue for some teams. The Roush-Fenway drivers normally run well here, but did not seem to unload that strongly, which may give the advantage to the Hendrick teams this weekend.
