All the action is slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. and the race will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

Sometimes chalk is the best way to go in these Sprint Cup races and that was the case last Sunday at Las Vegas with Kevin Harvick coming through with the victory as my top pick at +450 betting odds.

Martin Truex Jr. took second and I almost hit a huge payday in Ryan Newman finishing third as my top longshot at +3000.

Turning to this Sunday afternoon’s race, the following are my top picks for favorite, contender and longshot based on current betting odds as provided by Sportsbook.ag.

The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)

I was tempted to go with Harvick again this week at +300 odds as this race’s defending champion, but I am stretching things a bit with a play on Dale Earnhardt Jr. as one of four drivers listed at +800 odds to win on Sunday.

The No. 88 car has gotten off to a blazing hot start with three top-five finishes in the first three point races of the new season.

After placing third at both Daytona and Atlanta, this team was in position to win again last week before finishing fourth. Dale Jr. has also raced well at this track in recent years including a second-place finish in last year’s race. He has now finished in the top-five in three of his last Sprint Cup runs at Phoenix.

The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)

Sometimes you bank on a driver’s overall ability in terms of finding value in longer odds as is the case with this week’s pick as my top contender.

[dfads params=’groups=63791&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

I am going with Matt Kenseth at +1200 odds to break a dry spell in Victory Lane that dates all the way back to the 2013 season. The No. 20 car won seven point races that season, but it was shutout in 2014 despite finishing seventh in the final Sprint Cup standings.

Kenseth also adds some value to these odds with a third-place finish in the second race at Phoenix last year.

The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)

Ryan Newman is a +2500 longshot to win this week and along with his strong run at Las Vegas, he brings some solid value to these odds given his past performance at Phoenix. That is why I am going with the No. 31 car again as my top longshot play for this Sunday.

The main thing I like about Newman is that he is very good at keeping his car in position to win even if the actual victories are far and few between. It also helps that since winning this race in 2010, he has posted six additional top-ten finishes in a Sprint Cup race at Phoenix with four of the runs ending in the top five.
