Race: Crown Royal Matthew & Daniel Hansen 400 at Richmond International Raceway
Date: Saturday, April 30, 2011
Time: 7:43 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 7:30 PM EST on FOX

This race is critical in terms of its recurrence on the schedule in September, when it will be the location of the final “regular season” race to set the field for the Chase for the Championship.

Safe Bets:

1. Kyle Busch (8/1): Busch has to be considered the odds-on favorite heading into Saturday’s race as the prevailing winner of the last two spring races at Richmond. He has the best average finish overall, a very low 5.2, and has 10 top-5 finishes in 12 starts.

Along with two wins, Busch has finished second at Richmond four times.

2. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (10/1): Earnhardt Jr. is coming off a powerful performance at Talladega, where he arguably had the fastest car, which he used to push teammate Jimmie Johnson to victory. Junior is tied with Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon for most wins overall at RIR with three and led the morning practice session on Friday.

Dale Jr. is currently 3rd in Sprint Cup points.

Dark Horse:

1. Ryan Newman (25/1): Newman is a previous winner at Richmond (2003), but has run better in the spring race overall than the fall. In fact, Newman has seven straight top-10 finishes at Richmond in the spring race. He’s 7th in Cup points and was fifth-fastest in practice Friday morning.

Summary: The Joe Gibbs Racing teams have been struggling to find the speed they need this year, with Kyle Busch the only JGR driver currently in the top 10. This race will be a crucial test for Denny Hamlin in front of a hometown crowd, where he’s won two of the last four races (both in the fall). Also watch: Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick.
