Preview: Now that the spectacle known as the Daytona 500 is over, NASCAR drivers like to say that the ‘real’ season is starting in California. The Cup Series has only raced in Fontana since 1997 – once a year at first, then twice a year starting in 2004, for a total of 19 races. It’s worth noting that Roush Fords have won the last five straight spring races here, though Jimmie Johnson in a Chevy won three straight in the fall.

Auto Club Speedway is a 2.0-mile D-shaped oval with 14 degrees of banking in the turns and is known for its high speeds.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (9-2): Johnson has the best average finish at this race track with a 5.8 and has won four times in 14 starts. He has six straight top-10 finishes here (both spring and fall dates) and has never finished lower than 16th.

2. Carl Edwards (12-1): Edwards has the second-best average finish behind Johnson with a 6.6 and won this race in 2008. Except for a 29th-place finish in 2007, Edwards has never finished worse than seventh-place in his ten other starts.

Dark Horse:

1. Jamie McMurray (60-1): Hard to believe that the odds are that high for the Daytona 500 winner, who is also on the pole for this race. Jamie Mac has a decent record here, especially when he was with Ganassi, whom he is back with now. In his first five starts in Fontana with Ganassi, McMurray scored three top-5 finishes, and he will be racing with greater confidence now than he was back then.

Summary: Keep an eye on the weather this weekend with a chance of rain in the forecast both days. Any one of the Roush drivers is a contender, especially Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth, along with Edwards. Toyota has never won a Cup race at Fontana, though Kyle Busch has been strong here; Dodge has only won once.
