2009 Samsung 500 Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: Samsung 500 – Texas Motor Speedway
Date: Sunday, April 5, 2009
Time: 2:16 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:30 PM EST on FOX

Preview: After two weeks of short track shakin’ and bakin’, the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit heads to the 1.5-mile quad-oval of Texas Motor Speedway, where speeds routinely top 200 miles per hour on the straights. This is traditionally a Ford-friendly track – particularly the Roush-Fenway Fords – which should be welcome news to the Roush teams after the organization struggled in Bristol and Martinsville.

Safe Bets:

1. Carl Edwards (+450): Edwards hasn’t won a race yet this season and had sub-par performances the last two weeks, along with most of his teammates. But before Bristol and Martinsville he finished 3rd in Atlanta, a track often compared to Texas. He’s won more races at TMS than any other driver – three wins in eight races, including the sweep of this track last season.

2. Jimmie Johnson (+600): Johnson pulled off the win last week at Martinsville and has the best average finish at Texas with a 9.1, including one win in 11 starts. He finished second in this race last year and crew chief Chad Knaus excels at adjusting to changing track conditions in races like this one which extend from afternoon to evening hours.

Dark Horse:

1. Jamie McMurray (+3500): As mentioned above, this track has been a good one for the Roush-Fenway Fords and McMurray has been strong here recently, with three top-10s in his last four Texas starts. His best finish was a 2nd in the 2005 Samsung 500 and he also had the best outing among the Roush drivers last week in Martinsville.

Summary: Also keep an eye on Matt Kenseth, who’s finished 2nd in three of the last six races here. More than half the Texas Cup races have been won from a top-5 starting spot, though just one winner came from the pole. Kenseth is not known for qualifying, but his steadfastness pays off when it comes to working his way through the field.
