One series does not make a season, and the Mets will have to be terrific to contend in the difficult NL East.

Washington is a much improved team, and the Nationals were on quite a few radar screens before the season.

Washington signaled that they were serious about contending when they acquired Gio Gonzalez in the offseason. Strasburg, Gonzalez, and Jordan Zimmerman form an impressive top three in the starting rotation. Ryan Detwiler is battling for the final spot in the rotation, and he will need to pitch well to keep this spot.

Ryan Zimmerman is healthy now, and he should be a .300 hitter in the middle of the Nationals lineup. Michael Morse is out of the lineup now with an injury.

Morse is one of the best young hitters in the game. Drew Storen’s elbow injury is a major cause for concern for Nationals fans. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The New York Mets have had high expectations several times over the last few years, and they have never met those lofty expectations. Fans can only hope that with lower expectations the team can surprise to the upside this season. Johan Santana’s brilliant performance on opening day had to be very encouraging for the team.

David Wright is the anchor in the middle of the lineup. Wright is hitting .667 through three games, and he has come up with several clutch hits. David Murphy has been tremendous as well, and his versatility really helps this team. Lucas Duda and Ike Davis are two young guys that this team needs a lot out of in 2012.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding this team is their poor defense.

Neither of these pitchers are going to strike too much fear in the opposing teams lineup. I like this one to be higher scoring than the oddsmakers expect.
