MLB Matchup Stats | MLB ATS Insider Preview

The Jays appeared to be in fine form when they returned home to accomplish a four-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, while the Angels flew across the country after having lost three of their last four games.

Things have changed in a big way with this series after the Angels took each of the first three games, including a decisive 9-3 victory in the third game on Sunday. The Blue Jays now look to avoid their second four-game losing streak of the season.

The Blue Jays will turn to Mark Buehrle in hopes of stopping the bleeding. Buehrle has been by far the team’s best starter this season, and is coming off a gem of an outing against the Phillies. In that contest, Buehrle didn’t surrender a run over seven innings of work, allowing three hits and walking two.

The Angels got to Buehrle in a big way last season. In two starts against them, he posted an 11.70 ERA, his highest against any team last season, allowing 19 hits and five home runs in 10 innings of work.

The Angels counter with C.J. Wilson. He’s been very effective since a rough opener in which he allowed six runs against the Seattle Mariners. Wilson had won two in a row before being straddle with a no decision in his last start.

In that game, Wilson, allowed three runs on seven hits in eight innings of work, walking three. He made two starts against the Blue Jays a year ago, posting a 3.77 ERA, allowing only 12 hits in 14 1/3 innings of work, limiting Jays batters to a .218 clip.

Both starters have been strong this season, and it’s hard to imagine either of these guys taking a loss in this one. The Angels are 12-3 in Wilson’s last 15 road starts, but the Blue Jays are 11-4 in Buehrle’s last 15 starts at home. For that reason, it seems like the total is more worthy of a look.

The trend for these teams had been to play to the over when they met in recent years, but this series has really bucked that trend. Now, with the two best starters we’ve seen yet in this four-game set, another low-scoring game can be expected. The Jays’ hot bats appear to have really cooled off.

The under is 21-6-2 in Buehrle’s last 29 starts overall, and it is 9-2-2 in his last 13 home starts.

The play: Under 9
